I refused to buy the textbook wince the lecturers goes on about how he hates capitalism etc but the course book is his own work so I didnt want to give him any royalties. Still managed a decent mark with just the readings. Its the sort of subject that if you want a good mark you jsut smile and nod in and they like you.
This is so true for that course.
I had him as my tutor also, and the very first tute and me and a girl in the class didn’t agree with his particular view and the reaction was amazing, like how dare someone not agree with it.
We quickly learned, nod your head agree and get the course over with.
And the hypocrisy was amazing, I remember them ranting on about big evil corporations while at the same time drinking a can of coke!
Vague plan is to just stick a dip ed on the end anyway so it's no biggie if i dont end uo with a clearly defined career path from ANU
Oh me too, that’s my back up plan if I can’t get a job in Archaeology (can be hard to find).
But yeah, if you really are interested in IR and especially politics youll be fine, don't stress about it now. Because if you don't like it, its really not hard to change to something else.
Agree completely, try it, at least then you will know if it’s for you or not, you can always easily change midyear or at the end, no big deal.
France the only country in Europe? That sort of narrowminded thinking hardly seems like what you'd be expecting in a course called INTERNATIONAL relations.
Haha yeah, it seemed that we spent so much time just on France, and while it is a very important aspect I think there are so many other countries that could have been looked at. It does look at different areas, but when Gemma is doing it she really focuses on France. Oh, one tip – when doing your essay in that you choose the topic DON’T do the French Revolution as everyone does and it seems they don’t like that, all of us who did completely independent and different topics got great marks, so think outside the box.
British History... Sounds really good. Which language did you do?
The British History subject: Ends of Empire: British Colonial Rule and its Outcomes (which I wasn’t that keen on doing) really surprised me and I found it so interesting, the Lecturer was good and really knew her stuff and the tutor was great. The course content didn’t get boring at any time and the readings were good. The Exam was easier than we all expected.
Another history one I did for the second semester was Three American Revolutions, I knew nothing about American History so thought I’d give it a shot, it was an excellent course, the lecturer was amazing and the readings interesting, all the course content was excellent, I’d definitely recommend it if you are interested in modern history.
The languages I was doing were French and German, I didn’t continue with French in the second semester as I found one of the teachers so frustrating, she used to scream at you if you pronounced something wrong, but it was ok for her to butcher English when she spoke. German I stuck with and loved, the teachers were excellent, although it would be better if there was more oral to practice, but still thought it was very good.
