Hey,

i've been following these threads for a while,

I'm an undergrad student in the same position and currently fuming at accom services. I just got the letter as well.

I was wondering what happened last year in the same circumstances and did the off campus accom have the essentials such as cooking services, bike lockup etc..

Thanks

Who knows - people have been saying that those at the Rex share cooking laundry etc with Fenner and get involved in their Hall events, but most of us ickle firsties are still pretty much in the dark about what exactly external accom entails.

Yes, last year kids got to use the facilities in places like Fenner, they were NOT allowed to use Hotel facilities, like the pool etc. Lol

Could be a bit of a hassle, every time you want to go to the kitchen you have to walk down the road, lol.

I did it last year and changed degrees this year, bored me to death, a lot of my mates doing it changed this year too. But then I also know some friends who loved it. lol

The foundations of IR, Intro to Politics (wanted to take others instead but one isnt running in 2010 and one is only in second semester), Spanish Intermediate and German Beginners, which probably won't work out due to various clashes and the fact that the degree isn't structured so that doing 2 languages is easily workable.

As for getting into B&G, lucky! I feel that I will be one of the homemade tshirt wearing brigade :p

It’s definitely possible to do two languages together. I was doing French and German (eventually dropped the French as couldn’t stand the teacher). The German teachers are great, we learned so much after a few weeks in the beginners’ class. I have friends who do Spanish also (along with German) and they think it’s even better (you get more oral practice in Spanish – German not so much until the end, but still learn a lot).

Yeah I just changed out of IR too, politics is a bitch. Defintiely do Intro to Pols though, you'll struggle to make up your two 1st years POLS without it (intro to IR and money power war in 2nd sem=death). Having said that I'm the only one I know who really hated IR, all my friends love it.
And if you're in external accommodation you will get some perks to make up for not having easy access to some things - your own bathroom, more space etc. and there's obviously a lot of you so it's not like you'll be suffering alone. If you end up at the place near Fenner I'd definitely try and join in on some of their O week stuff cos they can teach you the shortcut to uni, closest place to get groceries, how to avoid the park etc.

You haven’t met me then, I was ready to hang myself by the time we got to the Role Play in Money, Power, War.

And Jim George just put me to sleep in all the Intro to IR lectures! lol

I am dying to do Money Power War but the course page on the website says it's not running in 2010 which is crap! Oh well, if you say Intro to Pols is worth it (my cousin said that any Intro subject has got to be worth it for a degree like this, pretty removed from most high school subjects) then I suppose I'll deal.

What exactly was it that you guys hated about it? I mean, I figure it's one of those things where you either really want to do it because it's the kind of thing you spend your spare time doing, or you're just not interested.

Edit: okay you guys are scaring me now :p

There's a reason I didn't go to those...are you just doing arts now? What's your major?
Changed degrees completely, went from the Bachelor of Arts (International Relations) to the Bachelor of Archaeological Practice (what I originally wanted to do but got sucked into changing my preferences to IR because I thought it sounded interesting, lol).

Will major in Archaeology and Archaeological Practice (have to do those two majors with that degree) and will then do Anthropology and Language as electives.

What did you change to?

OK, I decided to do the IR degree because I thought it would be really interested and I’m generally interested in International Politics and Relations, but I found the degree far from it, I also think it depends on the lecturer you get.

Subjects I didn’t like and why:

EURO Europe in the Modern Era, Foundations of IR:
While it was interesting and a decent course, I kinda got sick of it when it felt like we spent 3 weeks discussing the printing press. There were two lecturers, Ben and Gemma, Ben was an amazing lecturer and kept the course so interesting, but when we had Gemma it was good, but not as good as Ben. I also had a knob for a tutor, lol.

And by the end of the course you were left thinking that France was the only country in Europe.

Intro to International Relations:
This course could have been so interesting, but Jim George made it so boring, he talks in a monotone fake oxford accent that just annoys you, and he screams at people in lectures for having their phones on (which I agree with) but kinda makes him look stupid when his own phone keeps ringing during lectures. He also kinda lost me when he was talking about Obama making progress with the USSR (correct me if I’m wrong, but the USSR doesn’t exist anymore, something a lecturer of IR should know). I was also annoyed that we were told we NEED to buy the IR Book (his book) which was $70 and then we also had to pay $60 for a brick (bits of photocopied books stuck together), we never once used his book (so I have a brand new copy, untouched if you want? Lol) and the readings were pretty boring.

Money, Power, War:
Well, what can I say about this course, weird, odd, very easy (got a Distinction with little effort), kinda pointless. It was interesting sometimes, but other times you just had a view shoved down your throat and if you didn’t agree then there is something wrong with you. The role play was that everyone had to be in a trade union and argue for pay and condition stuff, everyone had to stand up in the lecture and talk for about 2 min, it took 3 hours of my life that I will never get back. Lol

The rest of the subjects I did were really good, Languages, British History and American Revolutions. I heard the intro to pols was good too.

Pretty much agree with the above comment. IR is good as long as you have a strong grasp of the theories that they teach you in Euro and Intro to IR...i really didn't get them and therefore hated the whole idea of studying/working in IR. MPW was the biggest bludge ever, I refused to buy the textbook wince the lecturers goes on about how he hates capitalism etc but the course book is his own work so I didnt want to give him any royalties. Still managed a decent mark with just the readings. Its the sort of subject that if you want a good mark you jsut smile and nod in and they like you.
Good courses for me were the British Colonialism in first semester and I do italian which I really like/am good at. So I'm trying out art history this year along with italian and if I'm no good at art history my majors will be italian and history. Vague plan is to just stick a dip ed on the end anyway so it's no biggie if i dont end uo with a clearly defined career path from ANU.

But yeah, if you really are interested in IR and especially politics youll be fine, don't stress about it now. Because if you don't like it, its really not hard to change to something else.

France the only country in Europe? That sort of narrowminded thinking hardly seems like what you'd be expecting in a course called INTERNATIONAL relations.

Obama and USSR. Um. Just... um. Wow. Well, he certainly seems like a 'tard. As for the book, I may take you up on that, see how things go. Gah. He sounds like the kind of person I'd be sentencing to death over and over in the margins of my notebook.

As for Money, Power, War, I'm not really surprised - did you have Rick Kuhn? He wrote an article on the Australian Left and the Vietnam War that I used for my Society and Culture major, and he's also associated with the Socialist Alternative so a somewhat shovey approach sounds about right.

British History... Sounds really good. Which language did you do?

Edit: Looks like I'm going to have to take as many history courses as possible for maximum enjoyment. The whole reason I like Modern History because it's essentially a political/social history, the effects of which are still so relevant today - could never stomach Ancient for that reason. So dry!

This is so true for that course.

I had him as my tutor also, and the very first tute and me and a girl in the class didn’t agree with his particular view and the reaction was amazing, like how dare someone not agree with it.

We quickly learned, nod your head agree and get the course over with.

And the hypocrisy was amazing, I remember them ranting on about big evil corporations while at the same time drinking a can of coke!

Vague plan is to just stick a dip ed on the end anyway so it's no biggie if i dont end uo with a clearly defined career path from ANU
Oh me too, that’s my back up plan if I can’t get a job in Archaeology (can be hard to find).

But yeah, if you really are interested in IR and especially politics youll be fine, don't stress about it now. Because if you don't like it, its really not hard to change to something else.
Agree completely, try it, at least then you will know if it’s for you or not, you can always easily change midyear or at the end, no big deal.

France the only country in Europe? That sort of narrowminded thinking hardly seems like what you'd be expecting in a course called INTERNATIONAL relations.
Haha yeah, it seemed that we spent so much time just on France, and while it is a very important aspect I think there are so many other countries that could have been looked at. It does look at different areas, but when Gemma is doing it she really focuses on France. Oh, one tip – when doing your essay in that you choose the topic DON’T do the French Revolution as everyone does and it seems they don’t like that, all of us who did completely independent and different topics got great marks, so think outside the box.

British History... Sounds really good. Which language did you do?
The British History subject: Ends of Empire: British Colonial Rule and its Outcomes (which I wasn’t that keen on doing) really surprised me and I found it so interesting, the Lecturer was good and really knew her stuff and the tutor was great. The course content didn’t get boring at any time and the readings were good. The Exam was easier than we all expected.

Another history one I did for the second semester was Three American Revolutions, I knew nothing about American History so thought I’d give it a shot, it was an excellent course, the lecturer was amazing and the readings interesting, all the course content was excellent, I’d definitely recommend it if you are interested in modern history.

The languages I was doing were French and German, I didn’t continue with French in the second semester as I found one of the teachers so frustrating, she used to scream at you if you pronounced something wrong, but it was ok for her to butcher English when she spoke. German I stuck with and loved, the teachers were excellent, although it would be better if there was more oral to practice, but still thought it was very good.

FUUU HIST1015 isn't running in 2010. That must be why I'm taking some random Australian history subject instead. This is lame, are all the profs on sabbatical or something?
