I know drivers who are some of the best on the road who got their P's at 16 and did only 50 hours.
you have to be seventeen to get your p's, regardless of whether you've already done the hours or not.

Theres nothing wrong with speed limits. Hit a track or cop the fine if you want to go faster.
The design speed for all our freeways was 130km/h. Yet we are limited to 110km/h. This suggests to me that there is something wrong with the way in which speed limits are determined.

Bullshit. Fairly sure theres a linear correlation between experience and propensity to crash. And don't come back with P plate statistics because they're the most inexperienced group on the road, regardless of their age.
Not true.

According to recent studies, age and experience are separate variables (younger drivers more affected by peer group pressure, less developed brains, etc)

For example, in a recent study conducted in the US, an 18 yr old with 1 yr of experience had a rate of 0.223 crashes/individual, while a 25 yr old with 1 yr of experience had a rate of 0.108 crashes/individual. That means you're double as likely to have an accident if you start driving young.

As for the last part of this quote, you're a complete downer. How is the death of one person justifiable for the 'freedom' of others with regards to driving, which is a privilege? I'm all for bumping up speed limits and letting the problem sort itself out, but how does a needless death help anyone when you tack on the effects of crying parents and bleeding hearts?
Um we have already reached a point where we justify deaths based on the freedom to drive. Society has judged that it would rather have a road toll than banning cars completely, which is the only way to prevent all car related deaths.

yeah freeways are designed for 130km/h but the speed limit is set below the design speed to account for human error and shiz

lots of roads also have speed limits above their design speed m8

way to change my quotes to riets shithead

source for that? do you have any fucking clue how many variables you'd have to control to even make a study like that credible? and what the fuck do those statistics mean, they test one person and all of a sudden they represent the entire population? Theres a reason for p plate restrictions (though a few contradict this idea), they're meant to make controlling a car easier and safer for inexperienced drivers such as learners and p platers.

And as for banning cars, that wouldn't be the only way to do it, you narrow minded idiot. If you dropped every roads speed limit to 10km/h where the stopping distance was 1m I'm fairly sure there wouldn't be a single fatality. But to say that increasing all speed limits to save 2 minutes on the way home would justify the lost of almost 1500 lives?

the number of fatalities is already <10 per million km IIRC. Seriously just get over it. People are going to die on roads, that's all there is to it.

Fuck i am sick of the media sensationalising p plate crashes. Just let them fucking go and crash really who cares. The only time I have a problem with people dying on the roads is when innocents get killed through no fault of their own.
Personally i feel if someone has a semi serious crash (e.g. not a carpark fender bender) and it is their fault the RTA should take away their licence untill they do driver training and learn how to fucking control a car.
This should apply to everyone not just p platers

you cop 3 points for an at fault accident and between 2 and 7 hundred in fines depending on the charge, ie negligent, dangerous, reckless driving

EDIT: if you want to claim it off insurance, you need a police report. If you call an ambo/tow truck, police come to the scene. If you hit someone they'll probably report it to the police. Once the reports tendered you're almost guaranteed the fine.

have enough accidents and they're back to square one. not a perfect solution but works fairly well. About 2 years back a friend totalled his civic, cracked a parked tribute and made it roll after going wide on a turn. 6 months off the road and $700 fine.
