i dunno bout prelim english, but im doing power and culture and we talk ALOT about Michel Foucault, perhaps have a look at some of his work on power (try Discipline and Punishment, especially the chapter on Panopticism). Interesting stuff

Talking bout Michel foucault...he's also the 'founder' (populariser,,whatever you call it) of new historicism....
