I want to draw diagrams.

Seconded...kinda.

A network administrator has full control of what IP range / subnet ranges s/he uses...to fully appreciate programming issues in large networks require an understanding of switching, routing, DHCP and (to a lesser extent) DNS servers.

Like doing an imaging program to quickly deploy new computers could involve a PXE boot or a bootable program that users a fixed domain name that resolves to an IP (so that if the IP changes, the program still works). That could be an issue to talk about.

So, what exactly ARE you trying to achieve.

I don't think having local IPs will help, cause they're defined by the Network Engineer / Admin. Sometimes, it's a case of 'whatever I feel like' and what school they were taught at.

You're better off just mentioning components in a network (think server types [file, print, domain controllers, backup, database etc) and how the server software could affect things from a programmer's perspective.

For example, in the case of PHP (or any other web based language) programming, you might have to consider Virtual Hosting on web servers. And take into consideration size of the project - for a large database program you might need a new database server separate from the web server.

Consider subnets as well. If you really want to get your hands dirty, look at Virtual LANs and how they can impact on a program's deployment in a company / school (these are more networking issues, but they indirectly have an effect on how networked software operates - think access levels).
