Hey guys, just went to UNSW commerce orientation day where they had all the head of each faculties come up and talk and blah blah..

anyway, when the actuarial guy came up, he had up an interesting slide u guys might be interested in, it was a survey of the acst' grads from unsw...

btw, i might add, the head of acst was the ONLY lecturer who talked and enticed students to take that major because of the $$$ that could be earned ...

"
acst grad's with part 1 (?) earned, (according to the survey of nsw grad's) 42k-47k.

acst grad's with part 1 and 2 earned, 47k-52k

acst grad's with the above, (=FIAA ?) and 2-3 years industry experience earned 95-110k

acst grad's with 5 years of industry experience, were found to earn, on aver. approximately 150k "

;)

then he said he knew of an actuarist on a 1million$ salary

why do they never mention employed-to-unemployed ratios? =p

(hypothetically:

you have 2 actl graduates who earn 50,000 and 45,000 a year fresh out. however, you have 8 actl graduates who earn 0 a year because they're unemployed.

that means an average of 47,500 a year because you'd only get those 2 responding to the survey. whereas the other 8 wouldn't.

it all sounds good and well.)
yeahh thats a goood point ... i guess that how they lure them into such a brain wrecking major :p

very brain wrecking indeed... ...considering only 1/4 of first yr students from past statistics makes it into their last yr and then only 1/4 of that finds a job in the first yr after graduation....very sad

well all the 4th yr grads i know who graduated last yr have found jobs...if they arent working as actuaries, they're at mac bank doing equity or investment banking...so doesnt seem as bad as i imagined.

entry packages are pretty good too...like the place im at offers 60k for new actuaries...

the only thing that i think i was misled by is how long it takes someone to get FIAA. There's like ppl in their 30s at my workplace who arent fiaa yet.

WOW 60k at your work? geez.. i hope i can get that much 1st year out.

BTW.. that old person is doing some hard arse thesis on cusid or something like that (i can't remember). I don't even think she has attempted her part 3 for the past few years... She keeps asking me to do hard arse differentiation and integration...

Though.. there are a few people in their mid 20s still Associates... and when you go do your exam.. you'll prob see guys with grey hairs still attempting it.

Hey mala...you're working in some actuarial firm that like specialises in acst software? do they get you to do any programming etc? how do you cope with that..given that your other degree i think is app fin ?

on another note, does anyone know where to get copies of past part3 exams? I saw some from the English (London) syllabus and, if u studied properly, it doesnt look overllyyy difficult.

yes crashoveride, all u'd said is correct. very good.

u learn abit of programming from comp115. and i did pretty good in that subject so i dun mind doing some programming. But if its hard, i juz ask the programmers for help.

If you want copies of past papers check the IAA website - they have heaps posted there.

And it is hard - otherwise all actuaries would be like erning zillions
