For the above reasons and owing to differences in syllabi and approach, the authors of this document have been unable
(convincingly) to rank the various States’ subjects within the Advanced and Intermediate categories vis-a-vis level of difficulty,
save to agree that the NSW subject Mathematics Extension 2 is clearly more ambitious than the other seven: this is evident
both from the syllabus and the examination paper.
from page 21.

i thought that was interesting.

I know quite a few students from Qld who have a lot of difficulty with Actuarial mathematics.

WoW...I didn't realise (until now) how tough the NSW system is on us compared to the other states. Most other states are allowed to use graphic calculators while we're restricted to use nothing but scientific calculators. The other states have a formulae sheet while we only have a table of standard integrals. We have two 'advanced' mathematics (Extension 1 and Extension 2)courses while the other states appear to have only one. Also, Mathematics Extension 2 has got to be one of the most mentally challenging courses ever, compared to the other states. It requires highly sophisticated algebraic manipulation and pure mathematical skill. No wonder NSW is leading the pack in senior Mathematics....!

Now I feel very proud of doing the hardest level of high school maths in Australia. :)

Yes, the course in Victoria , specialist maths, is definitely not upto the standard of 4u. However most of the talented maths students here take up a uni maths subject in addition to specialist maths during year 12 which has a small impact on their year 12 results.

You're allowed to take uni maths units during school?

In some schools, with some universities.

Slide Rule, what course are you doing next yr?
Botany & Environmental Science, or Computational Science (with a botany major) @ ANU.

Botany, indeed any of the soft sciences, can be as 'hard' as you'd like to make them. Try developing matematical/statistical models for envoronmental problems / long term changes in coral reefs / forests, whatever. Its not that easy. I think there would be a strong demand for mathematicans to go into these fields, as its not something they'd normally do. Normally they would go into the hard sciences/engineering.

Yeah. I'd rebute that, Sera... but I don't think I can top Loner's blurb.

But I will add to it: I absolutely adore nature. Reason enough for me to do it.

I was just surprised. You initially seemed so excited about eng and physics.

I realised it's more of a matter of going with what I'm good at, since I like all areas of science.
