Xylem and Phloem (1 Viewer)

Did this table confuse the hell out of anyone else?

I had no idea what the "name given to current theory" or whatever was, so I kind of made them up and wrote transpiration pull and something else.

what i learnt..was that the xylem was the 'transpiration-cohesion-tension' theory and the phloem was the 'pressure-flow' theory..this question freaked me out when i saw it..but after staring at it for a while it actually wasn't so bad..

I wrote about transpiration pull and cohesion and for phloem I wrote about the "seive" and "skin" theorums.

yep that last bit put me off.... i just guessed and put for xylem - passive transport & for phloem - active transport, since the word "current" usually means movement. *pls be right* =/

phloem was translocation

xylem i forgot so i just put evaporation coz the water particles stick together when the top layer is pulled inot the roots then bottom layer goes with it.

for phloem the materials are loaded onto the phloem against the concentration gradieent and then transported aorund the plant, up or down whichever way it needs to go

xylem can only go up

phloem transferes the products of photosynthesis (eg sugars)

xylem transfers water and only water

that could still be right..but i think 'current' was refferring to recent/new/up-to-date..that sorta thing..

if xylem only transports water how does the plant get the nutrients?? It's a plasma solution with has the nutrients in it also.

Pressure flow mechanism...that has to do with the phloem. Not exactly sure if thats a theory though :S

i wrote that xylem was transpiration-cohesion-tension and phloem was pressure-flow. in the middle box asking for direction i put xylem was passive transport where water molecules were 'stuck' together by cohesion and moved upwards via transpirational pull - and for phloem wrote that it was active transport where glucose was moved in both an upward and downward direction from the sugar source to the sugar sink.

water molecules are 'stuck' together by cohesion. sap runs from root to leaves. tension between sap and water molecules. transpiration pulls water molecules in upward diection. hence transpirational stream.

im' pretty sure that....
all u had to write was

materials transported in xylem - water and dissolved inorganic nutrients
materials transported in phloem - organic substances produced by photosynthesis

transport process(or wateva it said) xylem - passive transport
phloem - active
theory for xylem - either capillarity or transpiration pull
phloem - translocation ..or mabye some others
