Writing a book has been on my mind occasionally over the last year. The question is, what about? Im thinking of a satirical piece about Australian society, we need more laughter nowadays with all the recent things that have been happening here. If not that, I had the idea of a tormented hero battling terrorists on an airplane while regaining his humanity (a bit cliche but oh well!).

Enough from me, what would you write about?

I was also contemplating writing my own book. I've started, but it has made realise that school has only ever made me adept at writing short stories. Bah. I have to add a lot of detail.

I've started a few blogs in the attempt of continuing it to book size but dropped all of them. Eventually may write a memoir though I think it's going to be boring and highly egotistical and arrogant. Always wanted to write a book but can't think havent gone through with any of my ideas more then 100 words.

I'm doing extended prose this semester (I'm a creative writing student), we have to write a novel outline and also hand in a sample chapter. I'm pretty excited about it all, it's a lot of fun getting to hear all the ideas and discuss how everyone will pull theirs off and all.

My story is a black comedy/drama about a stoner girl who drops out of university to work in a call centre for a helpline and gets stalked by one of her callers. There's more to it, but yeah, that's basically it in a sentence.

every year when NaNoWriMo time comes around i plan to write a novel but never do... if i do it will be based on a road trip that a friend and i took a few years back, but as fiction, not autobiography, cuz it needs some tweeking to be more entertaining!

I'm planning on writing, or at least starting to write a book next year, but it's going to be a little trivia book about the Melbourne Cup, so it's a bit different to what everyone else ere is posting about.

I'm working on a screenplay about a bank robbery, but it has a very strong personal crisis sub-plot

I'd reccomend anyone interesting in writing for a living, look at Hunter S Thompson's letters, The Lost Highway. Covers his early period, including the time he spent in Puerto Rico which became the Rum Diary. It gives a good perspective on what has just been said - was it Einstein who said "Genius is 1% inspiration, 99% perspiration". You can't expect everything you write to be good, so write as much as possible, it increases your chances.

I also think an important part of writing that some people don't grasp is READING. A writer should always have in mind their reader - I'm not suggesting bowing down to commericialism or anything like that, but you really should write something you would want to read...

To become an artist you need to know the rules first, then you can break them. Read, practice writing and find your unique voice. Don't try to be someone else and for gods sakes avoid cliche. How many 'first novels' do you think are sitting in drawers all over the world which are about a writer struggling to write a first novel...

I've been writing a novel in the holidays for the past year or so, I can sit and write heaps one day but I might go for a whole week with no urge to sit down and write.
Currenty it's over 100,000 words and I'm nearly finished and I'm hoping to try and get it published.
I'm not going to spoil much about plot or anything but the genre is sci-fi/ futuristic. A whole goverment conspiracy thing going on. :)

Yeah I thought about writing a novel.. I kinda started it just before the HSC... just writing and not knowing where it was going. But then I had the hsc and now uni... I have no time to write it, Im thinking once I stop studying all together. I'd like to write one before I die at leat. Even if it doesnt get published, just to have written one y'know. But if I dont then oh well.

If i was to write a book it would be historic fiction or dystopic/sci-fi fiction. Or I would write a history book.

The problem with amateur writing is that it can way too easily devolve into masturbatory drivel, critically loathed by all but the author and a small core of psychopathic fans.

Case study: David Gonterman

Please do not be like this man (while he is not strictly speaking a writer, his artwork involves some sort of writing. The principle is the same).

EDIT: He doesn't actually have any fans. Schadenfreude-tastic!

I'd write a tragedy based on Nietzsche's ideas as stated in the Birth of Tragedy. I was actually going to do this for Ext. 2 Eng, but then changed to poetry, got distracted, and lost my nerve. Bah
