ATM I am going through the New Century Textbook and I would like help on a question I'm on:

Manori's bag contained 10 cent and 20 cent coins. She had 202 coins with a total value of $31.90. How many 20 cent coins did Manori have?

Thank you!

Let the amount of 10c coins equal x and 20c coins equal y.

x + y = 202

10x + 20y = 3190 (converted to cents to make the equation easier to solve)

Solve simultaneously and you should get x = 85, y = 117

Dont worry, a lot of people struggle with word problems.

Also, when giving your answer, I wouldnt leave it in terms of x and y like I did. The question is asking for the amount of 20c coins, so state something along the lines of "Therefore, she had 117 20c coins".
