All they would need to do to allow this to work is to have an internet connection of any kind connected to the Wii. Whether it be a LAN connection or a wireless one.

Really thinking about it i cannot see how your friend has not figured how to make this work. Go to settings on the wii click internet setting and your off.

My friend has a chipped wii, he plays Mario Kart online :O

but just check incase my-friend-has-some-super-wii

there is a way to unbrick a wii by sacrificing a GC controller from what I've heard

There are Homebrew apps that can prevent your Wii from being bricked. Also you can safely update certain things using Homebrew apps.

I've never heard of being bricked by just simply playing online. Although I couldn't even play online with my Guitar Hero before I hacked my Wii.

it wont matter, only if u get some dodgey chip to chip ur wii then itll matter, the latest chips are probably wiikey2 and D2CKey, and these should allow u to update.
My friend has a wiikey and he can update and do everything a wii can do.

Well my Wii isn't chipped. I just soft modded it. I can play Mario Kart online with no problems.
