Vatican says evolution compatible with the Bible

I think this should clear things up for you Sprangler.

As I said before, you need to read up on the times.

A quote from the article..

The Catholic Church teaches "theistic evolution," a stand that accepts evolution as a scientific theory and sees no reason why God could not have used a natural evolutionary process in the forming of the human species.

And this pretty much explains why I believe in both the teachings of the Catholic Church and science in terms of creation.

I also recommend others to read this article, pretty much explains the point of view of the Catholic Church about evolution.

Goodnight :)

Hey so at which point does the soul enter into this equation?

The article was about the current view of the Catholic Church in regards to evolution.

It didn't have anything to do with 'souls'. That's a completely new topic.
In regards to Catholic doctrine at some point the soul exists, correct?

Therefore, at some stage in this 'divinely guided' evolutionary path, the soul is injected?

At which stage is this?

if you believe in God or not is up to you. but if you don't, then you shouldn't be attacking christianity (or any other religion). people are not trying to force their beliefs on you, they might be influencing you, but definately not forcing.
Reasons to criticize Christianity:

1. Christian values, and the influences of Christian lobbyists on society are abhorrent
2. They are wrong about everything
3. It's often funny to do so

Reasons not to criticize Christianity:

1. ...

I never knew that we were born with values. Instincts, sure; but values? Wow.
i also never knew that Darwin or science had anything at all to say about the soul or the spark of life apart from the fact that " there is no proof that it exists?" Please planck link me to more information on both of these.

I'm not even christian, i just find it disgusting that an atheist minority think they are ever so much smarter and more informed than the ignorant religious majority, especially regarding issues like the soul and death that science knows nothig about, but religion at least claims to.

When it is ever wise to accept as fact, that for which no evidence exists?

I think it reflects poor judgement to accept any idea without reason. To make judgements about reality, without the application of reason and evidence, is undeniably dangerous and foolish.

There is no such thing as a stage in which the soul is 'injected'.

The idea of the soul depends completely on faith.

omg omg so true. im christian (catholic) , i dont go to church at all, i dont pray at all, i dont think about God. religion itself is too stressful, i dont like priests telling me how to be a good person and have a good life when im living and breathing on my own without devoting more time to church. I feel like im a bad christian for not going to church.

Religious leaders would rush head over heels to present miracles and scriptures which they consider undeniable evidence. You just choose to reject these. By your logic It is foolish of atheists to state as a fact that there is no god without evidence to prove so. Pascals wager.

Society is progressing quite steadily under religious constructs, your " undeniably dangerous and foolish" talk is evidently flawed.

I didnt say religion shouldn't be criticized. Criticize religion for all you want. I said people shouldn't be "attacking" religion just because they are a non - believer. By this I meant not showing disrespect to the beliefs of others.
So should we show respect for islamic beliefs and practices, such as the right of a man to beat his wife if she doesn't want to have sex with him?

Islam Watch - "No Such Thing as Rape in Islam; Beat Them (Lightly) to Force Them to Bed" by Denis Schulz

Administering corporal punishment for women not covering faces, adultery, even victims of rape etc...?

Under what circumstances should we respect and tolerate evil?

I use islamic examples, but many christian values are just as abhorrent, though obviously you will be as blind as an islamic sheik to why criticism and disrespect for your religion is entirely valid.

Always fun to see people in heated religious debate as if they have something to prove.

There is no reliable, testable evidence for any miracle having ever occurred, that a scientific authority would accept. This is because they did not happen, or have natural origins.

By your logic It is foolish of atheists to state as a fact that there is no god without evidence to prove so.
I am agnostic. I make no claim either way.

Pascals wager.
Pascals wager has no intellectual rigour.

Like I said before, I believe in both. It's hard for me to explain it, so I just won't.

There's not much difference between attacking and criticism, as both tends to offend the believer, but for people who are just out to offend, no mind need be paid to them.

And it's true. Yes in the past, religious organisations had some conflict with science..but TODAY as in 2009.. most religious organisations see no conflict with evolution. You need to read up on the times.

I'll admit I don't know much about the catholic church and did not know the pope was against literal interpretation, but I did already had a negative view of him because of some of his statements on AIDS and contraceptives. Why the catholic church can take a scientific approach to evolution but at the same time go to AIDS infested countries and say that condoms can "aggravate" the spread of infection is beyond me. http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/03/17/2518950.htm

And while the catholic church may be compatible with evolution, there are many religious groups out there which take the teachings of their books literally and are incompatible with science.

So we are born with values are we?

ahh
Yes, dear, it's called evolution. Most sophisticated animal societies (i.e. great apes, wolves, etc) have some form of evolved morality - these societies couldn't exist without them. Our morality is just even more sophisticated, defined and refined.
