HSC hasn't got much to do with IQ really. It's about how you play the system. If you are taught well enough, with some decent IQ like 100s, you can still get 100 UAI...

We have dp624 here that you can ask.

I think Laurie is doing advanced mathematics...

I am not too sure about other geniuses...

Oh wait, Jessica Tong wants to do med.
yeah i guess, seeing as he knows like half of them lol

I think I remember reading in the papers that Sen Lin wanted Med/Science

I really thought Joy Thompson achieved something like 497 aggregate (possibly higher) in 2005? She got:
6th in Biology
4th in Chemistry
1st in Comparative Literature Distinction Course
1st in English Advanced
5th in Mathematics
1st in Cosmology Distinction Course (in year 11)
2nd in Philosophy Distinction Course (in year 10)

That's pretty much state ranking for over 10 units...
wow all 3 distinction courses. that's crazy! crazy good!

It's lucky that she could do all of them...

I envy her so much!!!!!!!

But topping some of them must have been really hard. So her 100 UAI is well-deserved.

I personally go for Laurie. But as I said, let's just give them individual title, that should settle everything. Laurie, the "King" and Ameilia, the "Queen".

I think it's more of a matter of "can" not "should".

But state ranking is really luck-based too...
But can't anyone really, if they apply themselves?
I personally believe that a person's IQ doesn't have anything to do with the HSC.

Okay, so just to jump into this "debate", we can compare their HSC results, but as we know, they did achieve things during their High School Life that are worthy of factoring in (i will list what i know);

Amelia Joy Thompson:

Year 8: HSC in Latin
HSC in Japanese Continuers
Year 9: HSC Latin Extension and HSC Japanese Extension

and thats what i knew, and for Laurie:

Laurence Field:

Bronze in AMO yr 9 and yr 10,
gold in AMO year 11 and golf in year 12 with perfect score.

Honorable Mention APMO yr 11,
Bronze APMO yr 12

Silver Medal IMO 2003,

Silver medal IMO 2004!

Does this put any spin on the debate?

Amelia Joy Thompson actually sat her Latin continuers and Japanese continuers in year 8. Then in year 9 Latin extension and Japanese extension.

So all up she completed 20 units. :jaw:

Oh, and just to clarify some terminology,

AMO: Australian Mathematics Olympiad (Australias top 100 in maths participate)

APMO: Asian Pasific Maths Olympiad (Australias top 30 participate)

IMO: international Mathematics Olympiad (Aus. top 6; the most prestigious mathematics competition in the world for high school students!!!!)

...WOW!

I think Joy Thompson was in the International Biology Olympiad sometime ago (can't remember when and what medal she got)...

I think it's actually more than that...probably 21 units as she didn't state rank in Mathematics Extension 1.

That's just too hard to separate.

I mean even if we compare marks between laurie and her:

Laurie & joy
3x 100s both
99.6+ for mx2 99 for chem (according to your prediction)
98+ for english 98.x for bio (according to your prediction)

But is it going to be like that though?

Looking at 2005 scaling report: If she came 6th in bio, that's more like hihg 97 or low 98 course mark (since top is 99) and if you put that into einstein that's like 98 or less...

And about 4th in chem she prob got 98 aligned...and that gives her little bit less than 99 scaled.

Other way, Laurie should narrowly beat her.
I'm pretty sure you can't use Einstein to estimate state rankers, because they're in a league of their own. Also, Einstein estimator only works well for the middle range. At the lofty top and the low end it sorta fails, because there isnt much data there at all.

I still say Joy (Amelia is her middle name) wins by a decimal point or two. =P

She also got gold medals here and there in the science olympiads.

174 isnt THAT high. I think my IQ (dont trust me on this) was tested at 172. And theres a guy in our year whose on 184. But all the IQ does is test for specific types of intelligence, it cant mash them all together into one big "intelligence" test. I can kickass at english/humanities, but cant do maths at all. IQ tests dont mean anything, and they dont mean you'll do well in the HSC.
Whoa, what the heck. i better go check sometime. I was like under the impression that I was low 100s, and that 130 was genius.... hmm.

hey i'm actually curious to know, does anyone know what kindof tertiary/career paths any of these 100ers have? I'm guessing there's a lot of med and law in there...but yeh. just wondering

I'm doing med at UNSW
a lot of the 99.95+ from my school are doing Med at Usyd, or not med at all. Commerce Law is a popular option.
I think Sen lin is doing adv maths at UNSW because Usyd didn't like him enough to give early notice, lol.
one of the 100s is actuarial studies.
another is either Usyd med or Umelb Dent.

etc etc.

wth with all these olympiads? This is about HSC! Whatever they did in Olympiads shouldn't realy count into deciding who the "king" is, lol.

Damn, I am late for fishing now.
