The one where you pay $500 or more to attract a 20% discount. I can't find any more information on this.

what i did

1) choose to pay via post office option (even if it says you owe nothing)
2) print out invoice with barcode
3) bring to post office, offer to pay $500
4) keep receipt safe, just in case (screwups have happened in the past)
5) check balance on myunsw, should be reflected as credit.
6) check again after you receive your commonwealth assistance notice (CAN). The discount should be reflected within.

.
how? in the my studnet profile -> fee statement & payment options?

and i assume this 'invoice with barcode' appears when we choose 'payment options' at the end?

also, we go and pay our student contribution even if our fee statement says we owe nothing, right? (and if we don't pay anything the entire thing is paid by hecs, which then we have to repay later?)

this is all so weird - giving someone money even when i'm told i don't have to pay them anything.

you need to wait a bit before its reflected in myunsw. If nothing happens, at least you have the receipt and the invoice as proof of payment.

yes, if you select payment options, post office, you get to print out an invoice with a barcode

if you pay nothing its automatically deferred (granted your owing balance says $0.00)

if you choose to pay upfront, post office will ask how much you want to pay, and deduct accordingly from your eftpos account. Some time after census, you receive an email outlining your HECS balance and any discounts and payments made. This is called a commonwealth assistance notice.

Just a question kinda related to this.

Does the 20% discount apply for the cost of the whole degree (3 yrs) or just this yr?

If you've selected to pay upfront, you will be doing so for the duration of your degree. So basically yes, the 20% discount applies throughout your studies.

hello all

there is a common misconception that you get the 20% off the full semester amount even if you only pay $500

example: the amount of my hecs contribution for each semester is $3600
  • if i only pay $500, what they do is add 20% to the $500 ($100) and then take it off the balance of the $3600 leaving you with a debt of $3000
  • they won't take 20% off the $3600 (about $700) just because you paid $500

If you've selected to pay upfront, you will be doing so for the duration of your degree. So basically yes, the 20% discount applies throughout your studies.
at UNSW (and probably every other uni), you can change it for each semester. for example i have paid up front for one semester, then have deferred debt for the other 3 that i have completed so far

so you're not locked in to anything, except eventually having to pay the money (somehow)

hope this helps :)

Yeah that's true as well. You can change your payment method for every semester. So if you decide that you don't want to pay all your fees in one sitting, you can change to HECS your fees. But be sure that you have a TFN (Tax File Number) otherwise it's pretty hard to defer your fees.
