For English, I'd say year 10 if you want to get into a class with students that actually want to do their work.

You should consider starting to study in yr 11.

BUT

that doesn't mean 7-10 is useless.

You need to keep on top of you studies at all times.

Half my chemistry class didn't even know what atoms or molecules were when they entered the class.

They are really struggling with the work/concepts and im at a top 10 school.

Chemistry also carries on from yr 11 to yr 12 according to people.

Just keep up in yrs 7 - 10....work a littler harder in maths because thats all important....study a little harder in yr 11...mainly perfecting ur techniques and time management and then really put in the hard yards in yr 12

when i was back in year 7, i remember my the secondary head coming to my maths class saying "make sure you keep up with your maths, you'll need it for the HSC" the school kept on drumming that fact to my head. i never listened and now i suck at maths big time
And I bet you blame it on 'natural ability' or something :D

I agree with the people who said to work hard at your maths in year 7 - 10 --> you WILL struggle with prelim and HSC maths if you don't get your fundamentals right. I would argue the same goes with English, particularly concentrating on language techniques and essay writing. Other subjects? Not very much so...
