Okay Im contemplating in to getting into IT, except I know nothing about it and which courses to do and where!, and which one is most likely to get me a job :)

So can anyone give me a low down on the subject of the area of study...?
(if that makes sense)

-Bachelor of Information Technology (Maquarie, University of Western Sydney)

-Bachelor of Information Systems ( Maquarie)

- Computer Science ( Maquarie, UTS, UWS)

What to do ..what to do...

What do you see yourself doing?

Do you want a closely business related degree?
Do you want to be a hardcore coder?
Do you want to apply computing to scientific and mathematical problems?

Its a wide field, it really depends on your strengths/interests.

Hmm... well Im looking for a more business related degree, and from word of mouth everyone says that UTS is good for that.

But , I need to broaden my options just in case I dont get in... so I was wondering what the other tertiary institutions were like and what they have to offer, hmmm Im also considering Wollongong I heard they were good too, are they vey business orientated?

I'm a first year studying Psych/Teaching and want to go to IT, however I didn't do Computers in the HSC, and only did a yr of 2u before I dropped to General.

I'd just like to know:

-is it absolutely essential that I should have done computers in school?...as I have an intermediate knowledge of computers, but I don't know how much I have missed (I know it isn't assumed or a prereq, but I'd still like to know)

-what kind of math is involved in IT courses?

thanks...

nope, they start from square one. a bit of knowledge on how to turn it on and simple word processing helps, but really they dont assume anything.

varies between course and uni, but typically a bit of calculus, algebra and discrete maths usually. most of it is pretty simple, its rare you'd be required to take a second year maths subject to complete a computing degree. the maths is more about getting you to think in abstract terms and learning how to prove things.

IT/Comp sci at usyd requires 18 credit points of maths which means you will have to (usually) take 4 maths subjects in first year and 1 in second year, most people take differential calculus, linear algebra, statistics and integral calculus in first year and then discrete maths and graph theory in 2nd year. That will fulfill your maths requirement. For those that didnt do 3 unit, theres life sciences which are easier, however from memory those still require 2 unit knowledge, so you math have to bridge.

Im pretty sure at unsw you have to take 3 first year maths subjects, which overall is equal to the amount you have to take at usyd anyways. These ones have a 3 unit assumed knowledge i think.

UTS doesnt have any maths requirements i dont think.

Someone else might know the maths requirements for other unis, but in general you'd need at least 2unit if there is a maths requirement.

Maths in computer science at uws what kills first yearers. It is not about what you learnt at school it is about how you think that will determine if you pass or not.
