if its for school, I know it's the nerdiest thing ever but I like being one of the first to finish it. That's usually my main motivation - but it results in me missing a lot of the book's meaning.

Just read it little by little. Force yourself to read a chapter each day, and then afterwards go over what the chapter was talking about. Eventually you'll know what's going on and you'll be finished.

Personally if it's a good book you'll breeze through it, but if its' crap and boring, i usually just force myself to read on little by little in small increments at a time ( i would usually try to finish a chapter once i start it), you could just read around 15-20 pages a day and you'll finish a 300 page novel in under 20 days or so :)

OR

if you desperately can't finish the book for whatever reason i.e boredom/ not remembering anything from it, just wikipedia or google the synopsis or something, lol i know it's a lazy way out, but i'd rather read a synopsis and get a rough overview of a book rather than sitting there for hours reading it and getting nothing from it.

It's a welcome distaction from everything else. No motivation. Just want to.

I read a lot on the train too. Helps block out the noisy kids and oldies.
