What is the ratio between core text and related text (1 Viewer)

In my belonging essay I have one core text and 2 related text. What is an appropriate ratio for the three texts. My essay currently is around 50:30:20. Also is it better to do a structure in core, related, core, related or just do everything in core then related.

Hi megaman64,

This is a question that will get asked over and over again, and in reality, there is no right answer. Different ratios exist for essentially any essay, and there is no predetermined ratio that is required in order to score top marks.

Having said that, some example ratios could include 50:25:25 or 60:20:20. Note that the general rule is; you should write approximately the same amount on each related text. If you were doing one related text, you would do a ratio such as 50:50 or 60:40. For your internal assessments, make sure you ask your teacher what they're looking for.

Nonetheless, the ratio is a non-issue. As long as the essay appears reasonably balanced to the marker, they will not notice. Markers do not sit and measure the ratio of related to core texts in essays, they mark an essay based on its merits. As long as your analysis throughout backs your thesis, answers the question and offers an insightful discussion to the module rubric, the ratio of texts shouldn't be a problem.

-conclusion

so I've only got 2 on my core, 2 on my first related and 1 on my second related... is that fine? or is it too unbalanced?

Hi Rawf,

Your essay may or may not be unbalanced, based on how long your paragraphs are, but the structure of your essay needs work. Your essay should have four body paragraphs and follow the following structure (as a guide!):

1. Introduction
2. Core Body Paragraph 1
3. Core Body Paragraph 2
4. Related 1 Body Paragraph
5. Related 1/2 Body Paragraph

You should always write about your core text first, followed by your related texts.

You can also alternate between cores and related texts, but that depends on the texts that you're analysing and whether you're aiming to form a synergy/pseudo-integrated response between your different texts. Whether you choose to go with the above method or you choose to alternate (or even integrate), these issues are of a lesser significance than the quality of your analysis and how well you argue your thesis with relation to answering the question.
