Dante's The Divine Comedy blows each and everyone of these nominations out of the water. Talk about real literature. No other collection could ever be named as great as this trilogy, nor as influential or important to the history of western writing and art.
ah..silly me..two hands down..I"m going with you..yep Dante's Divine Comedy!!

though...

The other triologies mentioned here..are a much easier read..but then...where's the fun? LOL...

George R.R Martin's 'A Song of Ice and Fire'
I think I've already said this, but WoT, LotR, His Dark Materials and Terry Pratchett's 'Discworld'

for those of you who love sci fi/ fantasy, and are exceptional readers, try the wheel of time series, 11 books so far, each story as good as the last.
Really...I almost threw CoT at the wall...KoD was good, but I thought that PoD and WH left a lot to be desired too.

ooo, easy, the Farseer Trilogy and the Pale Man ones that followed, loved them so much. Didnt like the Ship ones as much though. And childish as it is, i really liked the Tamora Pierce kiddy ones about Tortall. Tragic but great. Um, also the Bitterbynde ones, the Baker Boy ones and any book by Terry Pratchett.

I'll have to agree with Harry Potter.
And I'll have to mention the Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy.
Other notable mentions include The Sevenwaters trilogy and Lord of the Rings.

The one I am reading at present will be high up on my list, the "Emperor" series by Conn Iggulden. It is a semi historically based story of julius ceaser's upbringing and life (sort of the dramatised version of the little bit of authenticated history known about him)

Re: What is the best trilogy of books or serise?

"Dune" was really good, by Frank Herbert. also theres a few good books in the "The Worlds of Chrestomancy" by Diana Wynne Jones. "LOTR", "Hobbit" and "Silmarillion" by you know who. a couple of John Larkin books cos they all seem to be in the same series.

hey you guys, you cant count "LOTR" as a series, its just one book. if you dont believe me read the preface or authors note (depending on what edition youve got). i dont need to explain this do i? :)

"Dune" is my first preference.

The Old Kingdom trilogy by Garth Nix (Sabriel, Lireal and Abhorsen)

they are THE best books ever written... EVER

i cried at the end of the last one... purely because there were no more books... i felt like i was losing all my friends of the old kingdom...

i still miss them...

especially Mogget... thanks Mogget... thanks

I'd also say His Dark Materials. Love those books to death. In case the other fans here haven't heard, there is a movie trilogy of the series in the works... It's being done by New Line, the same people who did LotR. :)
