Every year I join societies and every year I don't do much - living an hour away from uni + ultra neurotic parents = little university involvement.

But with my parents away overseas this year, I'm going to try and give it more of a go. Namely with:

Political Economy Society
UniBodhi (if its still there)
Fabian Club looks interesting, but seeing as Osmond Chiu is the contact, methinks it'll be a branch of Labor Club.

Maybe something musical like SUMS or Wind Orchestra

hey guys how much time a week would you say the average club/soc takes from you?
Depends on how much time you actually want to give to the society. I didn't participate in a single Inner Child Society event last year, seeing I was busy whenever they decided to do something, and ditto for Go (but that's a longer more complicated story).

I would only be joining 3 socs at the most if you want to be active in them. I joined MADSOC, SUDS and SUG and never did a thing for SUG, but was very active in MADSOC (on exec) and SUDS. All depends on how much you want to get involved in. Will only join those 2 again this year :)

I want to join the following, but whether I actually get active is another thing:

- Badminton/tennis--still sorting out with a friend.
- MADSOC
- SUTEKH
- Musical society (choir)
- Chess club--can't now that my timetable has been released
- UniBodhi--does anyone know their meeting up times? I checked their website but it seems to be mainly talks and things--is there a solid regular meeting time?
- Fencing
- Debating

It's time for me to get on with my social life. I'm sick of just existing as a uni student

lolsexyness. ;)

Oh, and on the topic of sports clubs--my understanding is that you pay the membership fee to be a member of SU Sport, and then there's the individual club costs on top of that, right? Because all three sports (not that I will have time to join all three, but I'll definitely be joining at least one) says "you have to be a member of SU Sport" and then they quote their own prices too.

- SUWO (wind orchestra)
- maybe Sutekh - is it mostly roleplaying, Magic the Gathering, WoW and computer/console games, or are fantasy and sci-fi fans and such in it as well? I'm not a gamer but definitely a huge fantasy nerd.
- Possibly Greens or Greenpeace.
- MUSE sounds interesting...
- Womens College or Intercol choir (yes I know they're not technically a club or society!)

Yeah, I guess it's obvious I was a high school concert band kid:wave:

I was thinking much the same thing last year, being a huge fan of fantasy in general but not of roleplaying, but my worries were soon put to rest.
Sutekh focuses on a whole range of 'pop-culture' as they like to call it. Roleplaying and videogames do enter among our major focuses but Fantasy sci-fi culture of all kind from novels to tv shows are all given due attention. See our forum here to get a rough idea and ask any further questions: http://forum.sutekh.info/
Hope to see you there:)

Fantasy and stuff are talked about a lot, and there are a few activities centered around them (weekly screenings and movie outings, official or not). But mostly discussed by sutekh during the day in Manning.

The weekly events of Pizza and Games and Beer and Cards, focus more on easy to learn games, there is often a roleplaying game going on at Pizza and Games but most are fun and easy to learn board games.

Edit:

I'll be joining Sutekh, physoc, not sure what else, depends on what they have.
