UTS Business Vs. UNSW Commerce (1 Viewer)

Well the name says it all...

i got the UAI required to get into either of these two courses but i just cant make my mind up where i want to go...

Ive heard that the UNSW Aus. School of Business is more prestigious than the Business faculty at UTS, and obviously it has a higher UAI requirement (hence higher quality candidates) but then I've heard that the UTS degree is more 'practical'.

anyone here who has studied one of these courses, or has any ideas to share? Thanks

You couldn't go wrong with either choice to be honest. Since I'm from UNSW, I'll tell you that if you can hack a lot of Asians/international students in our faculty and a little extra travelling time to the university, then its pretty hard to say no to a UNSW commerce and/or economics degree.

Since its obvious you want to do a bit of research, google up the UNSW online handbook and read into our commerce degree structure and choice of majors. You should also go browse around through the UNSW Faculty of Business threads on this site if you haven't already for the sort of 'analysis' not available elsewhere...

Hey I'm tossing up the same issue here. Is UTS really that bad compared to UNSW in reputation? Does it really matter which uni you go to? I want to do B Business at UTS, is it seen as a highly reputable uni for the course I want to do or would a prospective employer look at hiring someone before me if they went to USYD or UNSW (If we all had the same GPA/marks)?

I ask because going to UTS will be a convenience to me but I could go out of the way for four years to go elsewhere... but the whole asian invasion thing in UNSW makes me not want to go there.

You should also go browse around through the UNSW Faculty of Business threads on this site if you haven't already for the sort of 'analysis' not available elsewhere...

The asians/international students are unavoidable wherever you go. If you're not stuck doing groupwork with them, there not that much of a problem to begin with.

You're correct in that our university has a lot of maths. I hate it too (I failed first year maths for a start) but I accept it regardless because unless you're doing arts or law, any other degree will have a bit of maths or science in it somewhere.

General education requirements (or geneds) are small non-degree related courses you have to do on the side to graduate. You can do whatever geneds you like (except ones from your own faculty) and for the most part, its quite enjoyable because depending on what you pick, they're easy, often fun or interesting and give your semester mark a good boost. You have to do 12 units worth which equates to 2x 6 unit courses or 4x3 unit courses usually anytime after your first year. You can also do them in summer if you wanted to.

Yes, it is possible to do my degree part time but in all honesty, dont do it. That means it will take you close to 8 years to finish because you'll only doing half the course load possible each semester.

its a shame you cant do gen courses from your own faculty, some of the business ones are actually interesting.

i'll have to do the degree part time as I'll be working as a full time audit trainee... ill have to fast track the degree by taking some subjects during the summer etc, and i really want the third major in economics.

I guess i'll go to unsw, mainly because UTS doesnt offer a combined business / eco degree which is what i want. Thanks for the advice.

Trust me, there are heaps of interesting ones available elsewhere. I've done a sexual education one (its not like sex ed or watching porn but in one of my tutes, the tutor put up a slide with every possible word for penis and vagina imaginable to discuss).

I already figured you were a cadet so yeah, I understand wanting to do the degree part time.

Otherwise, enjoy university when it starts next year, regardless of where you end up going to.

Also you may learn how to work with Asian/International people. This will prepare you for your time after uni when you will need to interact with them.
