Products like turnitin are "similarity detection software". They will detect if you have copied and pasted slabs of text from the Internet (eg Wikipedia) or from other scholarly papers that might have been submitted to turnitin in previous years (eg if your friend submitted an essay at unsw last year via turnitin and it was saved to the global database, then if you submitted the same essay to USyd this year it ought to be detected).

Turnitin cannot detect if someone else wrote the essay for you (and they did it properly - without copying themselves that is).

It is unclear if in the MyMaster affair the dodgy assignments were "legitimately written" by a third party, or contained substantial "recycled material" themselves. Given the volume of the assignments it would appear unlikely that every assignment was unique.
