How could you possibly say that without even knowing that each uni is now being forced to 'specialise' and that any 'overall'-ness is geared towards a biased way of looking at how 'good' a uni is?

Remember, UOW beat all other sydney unis in a recent scaling..
...

Hence the "overall".

I'm sure Macquarie is as good a uni as UNSW and USYD. But like you said, it's forced to be specialist. When i think Macquarie, i think Commerce. When you think UNSW, a lot more comes to mind, and when you think USYD, the amount of decent courses it offers is even more plentful.

This is why UNSW/USYD is overall better.

The short answer is: it depends.

"Better" is a very, very vague and broad word that cannot encompass everything. There are lots of factors to consider - employment prospects, reputation, degree structure, subject choice, technology and resources, campus quality, friendliness/student character, eateries, convenience, administration, lecture hall/room/lab quality, staff, social activities, clubs & societies, expenses, aesthetics - the list is extensive.

Additionally, while some information on the characteristics of univeristies is useful, I wouldn't place too much reliance on the commentary by most people here when comparing the two universities directly. Generally the only thing that you should take into account from the posts is how happy they are with their course at their particular uni. (People can vouch for their own experiences at their own uni, but typically they cannot say that theirs is better or worse than another with any true accuracy, not having experienced it for themselves).

I have attended both UNSW and USYD, so if you have any specific uni questions, then feel free to ask. However, asking "which one is better" is just too vague and subjective. Discussing "what are the good and bad qualities of the respective universities" might be beneficial, especially if each poster states which uni they are attending.

[lol @ NTB]

Yes, moonlight attended both USYD and UNSW. However he decided to stay at UNSW....Now draw your own conclusions.

He chose UNSW over USYD for his particular degree because he felt that UNSW was the best option for him... this means very little to other people who may have different circumstances / be doing a different degree.

er just because it was good for him doesn't mean that it would suit someone else. I hardly think that Moonlight wants someone to draw any conclusions what so ever.

For the person who started this, as Moonlight said it depends on many things, I suggest you look at what suits you and your degree the best. It says you are doing the HSC in 08 (unless you havent bothered to change it) so that means you're in year 10? Well I wouldnt worry too much now and it will be a while till you are going to start uni. But as everyone else has said some uni's are 'better' than others, its difficult to determine overall as they all have strengths and weaknesses. Check out the open days and see what suits you best :)

Which arts course do you believe is better, having done a bit of both ( I believe ).
I'm switching over to arts at usyd, however i'll probably also get an offer for unsw.. I want to major in philosophy mostly... I like that you can do religion subjects such as "Philosophy: The existance of God" which I believe I would find interesting, however I am unsure...

What's your advise?

Which course are you currently doing NTB?

Personally I was quite impressed with USYD's philosophy department. The administrative/housekeeping side of UNSW - the assignments, etc was a bit tighter, but in terms of subjects and teaching I prefer USYD.

If you do end up doing philosophy at USYD, I hope you run into David Braddon Mitchell. You can't miss him, he always wears black, every day. He has to be the most entertaining lecturer I've ever had!

On the down side watch out for John Grumley, I think his name is. I should have made recordings of his voice to help me to sleep...

In terms of teaching (what is most important to an undergrad, of course), and it wasn't really scaled as such - it's score was merely higher than any other university (i.e., The Aus created a ranking table, the Department merely created a score card for each university to determine the way in which additional funds would be distributed. There is a slight difference).

In regards to the thread itself, I am going to restate the obvious and suggest that we all take what Moonlight and Lazarus had to say into consideration - talk about what one considers to be the pros and cons of apples and oranges, not which fruit is 'better'.

Personally, I would say that in many ways USyd's generalist degree courses appear to be 'looser' than those at UNSW. However, given recent changes at both universities, I really cannot say whether this is still the case. In general, Usyd isn't too bad if you ignore what now seems to be the daily fashion parade and if you avoid the union eateries. UNSW, on the other hand... I have no idea. USyd has been my home for far too long.

At the moment i'm doing B Laws / B Communications at UWS (I hope to get SOME credit... most of my communications units so far have been about general communications theory and alot of them seem to fall under the school of 'film and media'... I also believe in sociology there is alot about society/law, which i believe was covered in my law introductory units... however the faculty haven't responded to me, i guess they're busy?)

Thanks for the advice, admittedly I haven't looked into the units available at unsw as much, but the units at usyd (at least for philosophy) do interest me.

Do you mean a real fashion parade? or do you mean that people dress up like they're going out to a night club? I'm used to people dressing up at UWS so I don't think that'll be too much of a shock.

In a social sense. One difference between UWS and USyd would be the number of students (at the one campus, that is), so even though I doubt that it will shock you, it may still surprise you. That said, at least there's more to the view at USyd than the gothic buildings would suggest ;). However, with the women come the men... There are far too many 'metroes' at USyd, and at times their over the top efforts seem to put those of the ordinary men to shame.

I hate the 'metroes'.

Also, if you happen to take philosophy... I may 'see' you there.

I'm just wondering why you want to move out of your law degree? Maybe you want to transfer to Arts at Syd then do grad law at Syd with credit from UWS or something? I just see the law degree and think, why are you transferring to Arts.

I wouldn't think there is too much difference... you get a huge mix of all different dress types. Some shockers. Some monks too..

lol @ Generator's metro remark.

Yea I want to do grad law, I haven't gone totally insane... The way I've worked it out is... currently I am doing combined law at uws. Hopefully with credit + summer units I should be able to complete the arts degree by the end of next year. This will give me a graduate degree (in something I actually am quite interested in) and give me a chance to do law at a different university or perhaps ( I haven't really looked into the requirements that much) overseas.

At worst I will have 'wasted' a year and I can return to UWS doing grad law there and complete my law degree. At the same time at best I have what... IMO is better prospects for the future - whatever I may choose to do.

I imagine it's a bigger social scene compared with the non-existant UWS one... however I also think that's a much more interesting backdrop.
