In regards to UNSW Campus Accommodation, the internet apparently costs 3 cents a megabyte which means I'd be paying over $600 a month, with my internet usage.

Well that's pretty ridiculous, I mean, 3rd world countries probably have cheaper or similarly priced internet, and seriously...I don't get why they want to do this to their own students :/

Anyway, I'm wondering all of the following:
1. What does everyone whom live on-campus do for internet?

2. Is it possible to make any kind of a deal, where you're on some kind of a decent plan with a decent download allowance (like 20-30GBs).

3. Does anyone use wireless internet? And if so, from which ISP?

4. Specifically, does anyone know if unwired (ISP) internet will work in the Kengsinton residential colleges? It is on the unwired coverage map, however I wanted to check, because there could always be some interference with university stuff and whatnot.

5. I don't suppose there's any chance of having your own phoneline anywhere on Campus?

Thanks!
Ever thought that you might not be able to do everything that is perfectly convenient for you and that you may actually have to give up some things that you are used to?

Don't you think that they would discourage such heavy use of the internet so you focus more on your studies?

I'd recommend not sitting in front of your computer all the time and going out to meet people and have fun. (Y)

Sorry too lazy to read all this but in short;

1. UNSW wireless isn't too expensive when you need it as a last resort BUT it's not very reliable (i.e. reception doesn't always work, and in lecture halls, even those which should have reception, the speed is slow and the connection drops out alot)
2. UNSW "Uniwide" requires you to use Cisco VPN which means if you were going to use VPN for another thing (such as connecting to a private network or your work network), you can't do it.
3. I'd more recommend something like 3 wireless broadband or the Vodafone wireless modem. Both require you to have a little USB dongle, and both cost about $12 per gigabyte (or something to that effect) but they can be used anywhere and work very well in my experience (I'm using 3 atm). Mind you the costs can become expensive if you were planning on downloading extensively so I wouldn't recommend it.

Personally if I could afford to live on campus, I wouldn't. I'd live very near in a place where I had the power to get my own phone line, ADSL internet, etc... or in the city :)

EDIT: Forgot to mention, it doesn't cost money to access the UNSW resources via wireless. I think you still need to have VPN set up and so on, but you don't get charged for usage IIRC.

If this is the reason, they need to be shot for stupidity.

There's nothing to say I can't do both.
