Actually there is a requirement. The Student Code Policy states that "students are expected to attend scheduled course teaching and learning activities", and is what you agreed to when you enrolled into UNSW.
Also, Law runs lectures differently, in that they are more like tutorial sessions, where interaction is the bare minimum. You will miss out on what is expected in the course, which is quite important for a degree that runs their classes differently from most other faculties.

I think it should be fine.. although arguably the first law lecture is where you have the best opportunity to meet new people and make friends-but if you really have to go to something else, then you have to go. Law lectures generally is a bit different from all your other subjects, you will notice that the lecture attendance rate is close to 100% for a few reasons-one is there is class participation marks-often quite a substantial portion of your subjects, and secondly law is not a subject you can understand without going to class and hearing the lecturer's insights, and further none of the law lectures to my understanding is actually ever recorded, so unless you have a secret recording pen or something or ask someone to take notes, you will be at a very significant disadvantage. I think in my past three years of law school, I have only had to miss 2 lectures and those were for urgent reasons.

Also most lectures spend a good half of the lecture running through the course outline which can be read yourself in about 10 min
There is no accountability for you to attend lectures. Like if you have something else happening in that time slot like doctor appt or meeting etc, then it is up to you to prioritise.

Thanks to everyone for your help, I don't want to have to miss the lecture, especially since it is my first one, but I have something else important that I can't get out of. As long as I only miss this one lecture I hope it is okay.
Should I try to find my lecturer on Monday and try to explain the situation to them and ask them what I can do to catch up/ what i will need to do/know for the next lecture?

All lectures SHOULD be recorded and I think watching that recording should be fine.
UNSW is really big, no one is going to notice you gone or a new person the next lecture.

Law lectures have 30 people in them and class participation is marked.

The lecturer can certainly have an attendance roll. Some courses, such as that in law (which is the course in discussion), can have lecture participation marks.
If you have a legitimate reason for not attending, you would provide that as evidence should your attendance become an issue.
Just because you've been able to get away with not attending, that does not mean it's allowed or acceptable.
It's an obligation of the student, which breach can lead to failure. Whether the course convener enforces this is up to them.

Question, will the buses be a lot worse at Central from next week?
They seemed pretty decent during O-week, but obviously not a full load.

However, having said that, Introduction to Law and Justice is a relatively general course, so missing the first lecture should be fine, but you shouldn't miss any of the readings if any has been assigned.
