L94 is city-bound in the morning--doesn't go the other way. 39x you'd get a seat, but you're still stuck trawling through Surry Hills. I've checked the Sydney Buses website thoroughly and the fastest way is the 891/895 (even taking lining up into account). Is anyone thinking of taking that Green Square bus starting next week? I sure hope everyone is because then the queues at Central will be shorter 
I'd take it, but I'd have to change trains by which time it'd end up being the same amount of time or even possibly slower if the bus gets overcrowded and I have to wait for another one (and which is quite likely--it sounds like 1 bus rather than 2-3 come each time which is the case with the 891/895). I was also contemplating taking a bus up from Sydenham station but again I'd have to change trains and you're stuck in city-bound traffic. *sigh* you can't win!
