Ok, we all know university is VERY expensive, and considering that I'm bored, I have decided to make some dot points which will help some of you guys save some of that hard earned money
* This one is kinda obvious, but if your driving a car, shop around for petrol and use those shopping dockets. Last year, during the expensive petrol prices, I found that petrol at home, in ryde was just over a $1 a litre, but when I got to Riverstone, it was 88c with the woolies dockets.
* If your travelling by public transport, you work out that buying single day tickets do not work out as cheap as weeklies. Work out which weeklies are cheaper - travelling between eastwood and richmond weekly turned out to be no more cheaper than a purple weekly which you can travel anywhere and on any form of public transport.
* Photocopying can be very expensive. Uni photocopying costs 11c a page. Some options include, borrowing the book and either scanning some of the pages or photocopy at office works. If the books can not be borrowed like closed reserve or journals, try and fit two pages onto every page ... you will save alot especially if you do a lot of photocopying.
* Printing costs the same a photocopying. If you a printing out pdf files from journals or printing off lectures, you can easily fit 4 pages onto one page and still be able to read it. Website, either save it to disk or email it or you can fit two pages onto one page. I try and do all my printing at home.
* Food is very expensive. A small box of wedges can cost about $2.80 plus more depending if you want sauce. Coke is about $2 and coffess are about $2.50 (i think). I try to bring packaged food from home when I'm not at uni for a long time. I also tend to bring a packet of skittles to lectures, keeps the sugar coming and keeps me awake. Lecturers don't mind you eating during lectures, as long as you don't make a mess.
* If your campus does not have a free shuttle bus, instead there is a public westbus (as richmond does), I avoid catching these. It cost $1.20 just to go up the uni driveway, which you can easily walk up in 15 mins. It might be very cold during winter, but a nice brisk walk will not only wake you up, but warm you up.
* Phone calls. This applies to mainly optus at the richmond campus. Optus views the richmond campus as NOT in the sydney region, so everytime you make a phone call, you will be charged more than you usually would. Vodafone does not do this and I am unsure about telstra.
If anyone else has any other money saving ideas, please feel free to post them
