I'm doing my HSC this year and I was just wondering when do we have to start writing
down our preferences for uni courses for 2013 and how many preferences can we have?

1. You can do it now, go to the UAC website or grab a copy of the UAC guide and take a look and see what courses interest you.
2. You get nine preferences.

With Medicine, if that is put as your first preference, I assume UAC have the list of UMAT results?

Is it bad that I still have absolutely NO idea what I want to do?

Lots of people don't know what they want to do yet. You're fine.

Just have some sort of idea before the end of the year though. Even if it is just "Get an Arts degree and go from there"

But don't you have to put down what courses you want?

Well, yeah - but that's why you put something general. Like Science or Arts or Commerce - and then you can specialise from there, or transfer into something you do want.

I followed that advice and put Science first. And then I realised I liked maths, and saw a Science (Adv. Maths) degree, and so I put that as my preference. Now I'm in that degree and loving it.

Speaking of that, I still don't know what I want to do.

OP: Chances are you still won't know what you really want to do during uni until your 2nd year. Just telling you. But if you're set on something, then I guess....

what if we change our mind later though, to something that isn't on our list?

Well if you can still change preferences - you change preferences and hope you get in through a later round.

If you're already at uni and you decide it's not for you, you transfer.
