Transaction Processing Systems.. HELP!! (1 Viewer)

Im Currently doing Transation Processing Systems..
As some of you are aware there is Batch processing and Real time Processing, Ive come across a Question that asks Which of these 2 approaches would be suitable for Each of the following systems, and Why support a conclusions..

a] A library loan system
b] an on-line system for theatre reservations
c] Statistical enrolments data sent to a regonial education office

Can some1 tell me what they have come up with PLEASE!

a) and b) mainly because of the nature of the system. the operations greatly depend on present and previous transactions, thus the system needs to have good integrity (accuracy, relevance, currency) i.e. if you batch processed the reservation system, it wouldn't have good integrity or reliabilityt, partly because a seat could be double booked. Similar for the library loan. The database always has to be current, of which this can be achieved using real processing.

c) Well there just stats, whatever processes are performed on them aren't really dependent, on the other bits of data (however once collected the data can be analysed to provide further info to the organisation). Also cost, it would be cheaper to process the lot at once then say one individually or a few at a time.

Use of batch for a) could be performed each day to locate overdue books by comparing today's date with the return date, and a mail merge done to match the name and address details with the appropriate overdue or fine notifications

Here's an easy rule of thumb to help guide your choices;

Will the results of data searches be needed immediately? (eg. library loan system needs to always be able ot tell visitors if a book is available or not, so therefore realtime.)

And then, how often is the data updated? (eg. Statistical information isn't going to change overnight because it takes a while to be collected through surveys and whatnot)

... and finally you can also consider how much data there is to process and if it's viable to do it in real time, and if the benefits of doing it in real time are significant.

Based on that, you should be able to decide for yourself which ones are which Good luck!
