personally i train at home. i find it has more flexibility, freedom and obviously better access. oh and $$$ does help.

where do you train and why?

yeah im thinking of cancelling my gym membership and just getting some more equipment for home, i'm not the most motivated person in the world and so i don't go very often these days. having stuff at home would be much easier.

I train at home. I'm not in the best shape or, well, young enough for the local gym. It also allows for more flexibilty as for after a long day at the chambers I can relax at home and go at my own pace. No need to travel (as time is precious) or fret that money is being wasted when I can't get to the gym in a week.

i mean just the exercises, not the bowflex thing, and yeah, i like to do them because i can get to sleep easier. not sure if it does anything tho :S

when i get some cash ill probably get a home gym

I'd only workout at home if I had space for a power rack.
That, a bench, a barbell, plates and a pull-up bar is all a gym needs.

You can get away without a power rack, assuming you're not a pussy or an overconfident gym newbie. I'm surprised you left out dumbells as being necessary for a home gym. If you're stuck using a barbell for arm, shoulders and chest exercises a lot of your body will miss out.

You can work out everything with a program using only squats, bench and overhead presses, dead lifts, barbell rows, pull/chin ups and dips .

You don't need dumbbells. I train at home a lot, and i don't use dumbbells.

You really don't miss out on much. True, barbell + dumbbell will trump simple barbell training, but it isn't required.

And Mumma, while starting strength is a solid book, it ain't the be all and end all of training. And work out 'everything'? ... well, I'm sure i can name some specialist isolation exercises that can not be done with a barbell (and if you could use one, you would be strong enough to not need a book). Also, some exercises are safer with a dumbbell, or at least more challenging with dumbbells.

As for 'David Betham', I'd buy a power rack over dumbbells any day. I don't understand how you're a pussy to use one - how do you get the bar to your back for back-squats? What if you want to remove the clean portion for front squats and overhead presses?
If you are referring to people who do crimes against weightlifting like curl in the rack, then yes, I'll agree.

Alright, alright, not everything - but everything that matters to me, anyway. I'm still learning and a beginner too. It's still alot more than most gym newbies target, anyway. I'm just tired of people prancing on about isolation exercises that really only should be done after you've got good core strength. Theres nothing more ridiculous than a guy with huge arms and chest but a piss-weak back supported by chicken legs.
