Stick to Optus or use the best network out 'vodafone'.

Thinking about this also. It's by far the best deal i've found.

Anybody know if tpg is an okay provider?

I've got it now, it works perfectly.
Had it since October '08.
No complaints whatsoever.

I actually searched them up on the internet, and they had a pretty bad reputation which made me overcautious. Even worse was their reputation for porting over numbers. But my port from Vodafone to TPG worked fine. Being paranoid, I went to go pick up my Sim card myself from Macquarie Park, where it's located. This way I saved the delivery fee and got it activated almost immediately.

They bought out SOUL, which is why the network name on the phone is that. It runs on the Optus network.
It's pretty much the Optus $49 Cap, like you said, but for $19.99 a month.
You just don't get a phone with it, and theres no contact.
Oh, and theres the Online usage meter! - updated every few days. Helps keep track of how much you've used and whatnot.

Best move I've ever made, considering my bill used to be in excess of $80.

The only downside was dealing with the shit customer service when I was signing up. I've never had to talk to them since as there have been no problems, but I'm just putting it out there.
I have an Optus phone, so all the settings for the internet usage and whatever were all the same, didn't need to change anything.

I think Revacious has the same plan as well. LOL.
