my bio class has just been given the assessment where you have to " investigate how an animal (other than human) communicates with members of its own species, in the absence of human influences".

i have no idea on which/what sort of animals i could use, at home i have 2 dogs loads of fish and loads of birds. but i still dont know how i could do anything to them to make them to react without scareing them as logically it would produce the same outcome.

i have a complete mind block on how i could tackle this assignment so if anyone has any ideas or suggestions or has done/doing it could you please give me a little hand.

thanks

if u were going to talk about dogs you should use stuff like their hearing range. compare this to humans. insects and fish are other good ones to use. fish rub fins or gills or vibrate the swim bladder and ditect sound by receptors in a labyrinth. insects like crickets rub veins on the base of their fore wings to produce sound. crickets ditect the sound by ears on their hind legs.
another good choice are bats. they send out sound frequencies and receive the sound back giveing them a mental immage of where they are going.

hope these are enough to get u started

The syllabus requirements state that the frequency of hearing must be compared between different animals. So I endorse the statement by premby. Also, you may want to focus on colour vision which is extremely important in the natural world. bees use uv markings on flowers to detect particular flowers for nextar. The bowerbird makes elaborate nests to attract mates. Some animals use colour in mating such as gibbons and other monkeys. These behavioural patterns must be linked to the occurence of colour vision (eg the number of rods or cones-whether they are pentachromatic as in pidgeions or have more than one fovea like falcon to see distant objects with high visual acuity) etc.

You don't need to get a blocked mind. Just do some reading and everything will become clearer.

AN animal- so u use 1 animal and find out how it communicates to other memebrs of its species for socialising, mating, food and warning for danger, and scare of predators. use a bird.
