Looking at top 10, of course it's filled with Law and Medicine degrees but I'm also surprised at the number of Arts degrees.

You are forgetting in the top 10:

1) UNSW Optometry DFEE 99.50
2) ANU PhB (honours) combined with arts or science CSP 99.00
3) USYD Commerce (liberal studies) CSP 98.85

These were all for the 2006 cut offs. Also USYD LLB is now 99.55 and UNSW LLB is 99.20. And are you sure you don't mean USYD Liberal studies (international) 99.05?

Isn’t it ironic despite the number of arts degrees attracting high achievers people often poke fun and look down upon at arts student. On the other hand, it is almost non existent for anyone to say ignorant generalizations about science or engineering students, when their degrees can also be as low as arts degrees of unpopular unis can go down to.

Are you trying to set up a conflict between 'science' and 'art'? Because many of the higher uai degrees involve 'art' i.e. BA/LLB, bachelor of philosophy, bachelor of liberal studies (international) and it has always (well at least in the last 5 years) been like this.

Also there's a degree called BA/Bsc by the way. Your comment simply suggests that you wish to reinforce your own 'uniqueness' (loal k) by aspiring for a design degree.

Why have they got one "n/a" course at the top of the list then done the rest by UAI?

By that rule shouldn't every medicine or non-uai-based course be at the top of the list?

I was just kind of pissed that day, since I read a whole bunch of other threads such as 'arts/communication degrees' and saw a number of engineering/science people bashing it whether they were joking or not. For someone who worked my ass off to do well with the hsc system, i took offence to read such ignorance.

Also having people around me tell me 'oh you are better than that!' with my choice of uac preferences again makes me sigh It's what I want to do and clearly there are other people in my boat by the popularity of the degree that I want to get into(cut-off), surely there's lack of respect in the general society in regards to arts degrees. Let's just say if I aspired to get into LLB or B Maths Adv, neither my parents or anybody around me would question those choices.

While medicine is moving away from the UAI only approach, there are still quite a few universities that maintain extremly high *minimums* These would be UNSW where the average UAI is 98, plus an awesome UMAT, plus a awesome interview.

Or places like Melb. where the minimum UAI is 99.6, and 230 + on the UMAT (which is like impossible). Entry into medicine = pain


As for arts degrees, our dux/2nd dux is planning on doing an arts degree at Melb. her predicted UAI is 99.95, but whatever doesn't really matter.

What I can't stand is arts students from Usyd/ANU/Melb going around thinking they're "da bomb" and paying out other people for going to other unis, even when they're doing hard degress like Law or whatnot. Its just stupid.

That said, I have a friend who has recently finished her degree in arts, she is currently working in a carpet store.
