Aspirin is made by adding acetic anhydride to an aqeous solution of salicylic acid. Equation is
salicylic acid acetic anhydride aspirin
2C7H603 + C4H6O3 -> 2C9H8O4 + H2O

If 1000g of salicylic acid is used with 2000g of acetic anhydride determine the theoretical yield of aspirin.

I got 1189kg but the answer says that it is 1300g

hmm... under the usual assumptions for HSC the book is right..

if you think about it, it's not hard to see that C7H603 would be the limiting reagent

each molecue of that gives a molecue of 2C9H8O4

the ratio of the molecular weights of 2C9H8O4 to C7H603 is about 180/134 .. approximately 1.3

so 1000g of the reagent will give 1300g of the product
