Hey Sam D, i was just reading the flip-flop section in your textbook very interesting, once i got onto the edge trigger component and onto the shift registers i went cross eyes, but i was wondering since you say a real flip flop should really comprise of the extra two components, the clock and the edge trigger with the latch component, but most text books just say the latch component is already enough to be said as a flip-flop, i can see where you're heading with the two added components to add more control over the flip-flop and integrity of the data states. But my question is, would we really be required to draw up the additional clock and edge trigger component?

All I can say is: a latch is able to store a bit, so if the question just asks about storing a bit then I guess a latch is sufficient.

If a question asks for a flip-flop then that's another story. A flip-flop is more than just a latch, so i'd talk about the clock and edge trigger stuff as well. It can only improve your answer.

As the latch components are what actually store the bit, then its understandable that simple discussions of flip-flops just discuss the latch component.

fair enough, if they ask about a flip-flop i can be confident enough to explain the other two comprised components, but the thing is would they require me to draw that additional clock and edge trigger circuit add-on?

I doubt it, but even if they were buggers and did, then I suppose you could draw a simple latch and add some comments about the clock and edge trigger stuff. That's gotta make your answer better than most!!

I suppose i can only be able to draw the clock as well but adding a edge trigger will be hard lol :p...
