That must've been a pretty hilarious event though.

We elect most of the charity work we do. Like, shave for a cure, jeans for genes day, bandanna day, daffodil day, red cross, salvation army etc

Charity work, within reason. That means no jumping off cliffs, nothing involving heights, nothing involving getting my hair shaved, nothing involving wearing skirts, or anything related. :p

I have a bit more to add on the 'pressures'. As well as being expected to cope with a majority of extra roles (I am NOT one for public speaking...meet and greets arn't so bad though), you also have the distinct pleasure of having to organise extra activites. Not saying that the role isn't 'fun' and 'an added benefit' for the reasons having been listed previously, but getting in contact with outside organisations to become involved with the school becomes a major hassle because they always 'want to speak to a teacher and/or school administration'. I don't like having to defer to them for such a simple task when everyones aware that I'm quite capable of it... its demeaning >_>

I guess you cant have everything running the way you want it completely.

Honestly though, if you're up for it and have spare time on your hands, I'd say go for it.

Hmmm, downsides to becoming a Prefect, as soon by Sydney Boys today - you have to do charity events, which involve playing dodgeball against Sydney Girls.....in a skirt. Made quite a lot of us Yr 11 reconsider becoming Prefects - that is, the skirts bit, not the dodgeball nor the charity. :p
Haha, our school does that too. Well, our corresponding boys school anyway when we have charity matches against them :D Especially seeing them have to walk around our school after the games...it's very funny for us, although possibly very humiliating for them

hey doctor jelly,

um, i have been src since year 8 and 9 and 10
and leme tell you what happens, when you are a SRC?

you have a duty of responsibilty and guess what, at our school we have the prefects do one assembly and the other week the SRCs so eeek, arhh

it takes up alot of your time, a combination of class time and after school time, even before school.

oh yea this thursday i have an athletics carnival and the SRCs are running the canteen all day. its hard work, when you have to, you know do fundraisers and attend src meetings. lucky mines in rolll call.phew hehe

but i what i do hate is the extra-curricualr activities, which you get offered as soon as you are SRC/ a prefect

this year im doing two of them and they are both mentoring. omg, we have to spend 2 hours with them and since i do two programs one at regentsssss park primary and our own year 7s it eats up 4 periods of class.

overall, though i think if ur src or prefect its good go for it. but remember your studies is what matters so i always pay attention to that and lcuky, my src coordinator understands that i care about my studies so she asks me if i can do it?
it -referring to a particular fundraiser or excursion or running an assembly.

I hope i raised some good points.

Being a prefect at my school, there is alot of pressure to be a good role model, to do the assigned prefect duties, and talk on assembly's. I don't really miss out on class, because most of the prefect meetings are done during roll call.

The pros of being a prefect is, gaining respect from many of the students & teachers, being allowed to push in front of the canteen line (muahaha), we get an awesome badge (lol:rolleyes:). Cons of being a prefect are, getting lectures from the year advisor/principle/deputy/teachers, for not doing our jobs, time is wasted.

But yeh, you should just ask the current prefects at your school. Every school is different.

Is being a prefect the same sort of thing as being a captain? I'm assuming it is.

I'm captain at my school and I really enjoy it. It sounds like you want to become more involed within the school, so don't worry too much about prefect duty taking up too much of your time. I guess every school is different, but surely they will understand that it is year 12 so it won't be too demanding.

I have a once a week lunch meeting (which is fine) and sometimes have to help with school events that take place after school. This Friday they are sending my fellow captain and I down to Sydney for some Parliament House extravaganza which will be the first time we have missed out on school, but we have known about it for ages so have been able to plan in advance.

It's a good way to get involved with charity work, which I wouldn't be doing if it weren't for this.

Also, don't underestimate the importance of a well shined badge. I still get delight from it.
