AVI itself is actually typically uncompressed, I think. Before compression with a third-party codec such as DivX, AVI files are extremely large... but the existence of these codecs makes AVI's able to be compressed much more effectively than MPG (incidentally, this is probably why you find mpgs to be terrible quality ... because people have to make them low-resolution in order to keep the filesize down).
