You learnt on some variety of musical instrument?

I learnt how to play 'Sunset Studies' on piano (Quite easy), and 'Subterreanean Homesick Alien on acoustic guitar. It's somewhat hard, but sounds very nice..

the breath of the morning
I keep forgetting
The smell of the warm summer air
I live in a town where you can't smell a thing
You watch your feet for cracks in the pavement
And up above aliens hover making home movies for the folks back home
Of all these weird creatures who lock up their spirits
Drill holes in themselves and live for their secrets

They're all uptight
Uptight
Uptight
Uptight
Uptight
Uptight

I wish that they'd swoop down in a country lane
Late at night when I'm driving
Take me onboard that beautiful ship
Show me the worlds I'd love to see
I'd tell all my friends but they never believe me
They'd think that I've finally lost it completely
I show them the stars and the meaning of life, they'd shut me away but I'd be all right all right
I'm just uptight
.

The lyrics are great too..

But yes, yourselves?

Umm... 'Yakusoku' by Horie. On the piano (vocal line only, I can't do the violin bit ^_^ ).

Err... Lemme see:

Kokoro de musubareta yakusoku
ima mo ima mo taisetsu ni
idaite, itsu no hi ka
anata ni atte shoshite
hataseru sonna hi wo
watashi shinjinagara, sugoshitemasu.

Failing that, 'Baker Street' (Foo Fighters cover) on bass, drums and electric.

Umm i think the last song i learned in full was 'Under a Glass Moon' by Dream Theater on guitar. The solo was definately the hardest part. I haven't touched the guitar for over a year now though, i've gotta get back into it.

oh yeah i listen to punk and rock and ska, but i like to play all style on guitar. I can't drum but i'm a competent bass player and basic pianist.

Since I'm bass, I work out songs on the piano if I can't be arsed looking for tabs.

Heck, and I end up learning it too for the piano. Score.

I'd learn by ear, but I think I'm tone-deaf or something similar.. Can't normally tell how to play something just by listening to it.

I find if you arse about on the piano you'll hit a note that seems to 'fit'. You then explore out from the note until you hit another one...

(While the song is playing, by the way. Makes it easier.)

Tried and tested method going back 6+ years... ^___^

Transcribing is completely different to learning a song. If i want to learn a song, i usually just learn it from standard notation (and just correct all errors). I learn songs for fun, i transcribe for practice (well i used to).

you should be able to
you listen to enough music

you probably just dont realise it
The ability to transcribe doesn't come from just listening to music, it takes alot of practice. Unless you have perfect pitch; then is takes a little practice.

What kind of songs? How complex? I've been playing guitar since i was 10, and started transcribing when i was about 14. At that stage i could barely transcribe stuff as simple as metallica (the solos and harmonies i mean, who can't transribe a few power chords?). If you can transcribe stuff like Dream Theater or Symphony X after playing for only 3 years, i'll be very impressed.

i'll get my hands on some and give it a shot

itd take me a while to work out more complex stuff, but i reckon i could get it eventually

i wouldnt bother with working out solos though
i just dont see the point. i would much rather improvise a solo than learn one.

but yeah, ive been working out zappa stuff, which is fairly complex
