No, it's because past Tibetan elites who lost their rights to own slaves under the Communist rule and a certain group of people who do not wish to see an united China are pushing to separate Tibet from China and are only using the Olympics to peddle their agenda. It's because people like you can not distinguish the difference between oppression aimed at an ethnic group and oppression aimed at the general populace. China's abuse of human rights dates back to the 50s, why raise the issue now?
why are you bitter about people trying to emancipate themselves from suffering? as i said before, its not about who has been put upon the most, but how we can change the situation.

if you disagree with the techniques of protesters or activists, suggest an alternative way, or simply stop talking.

Generally the people on this board weren't alive in the 50's.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the five significant religions of China (as in Buddhism, Islam, Christianity and so forth) regulated by the Communist Party? I'm under the impression that having the Communist Party in such a supreme position of influence is a bad thing. I feel that it's fundamentally immoral for the state to have such a control of thought/message over the people.

Democracies represent the will of the majority and protect the minority. The benefits you've listed are hardly protections.
In my opinion it's far better that the religions are kept in check by the secular influence of the government than when things are the other way around.

I am bitter because you folks only focus on the situation in Tibet. I am bitter that you only talk about how the Tibetans suffer under the Communist regime. I am bitter because you keep talking about how Tibet is not "free", while the rest of China is left forgotten. Not once did I see the oppression in mainland China being brought up. It's always Tibet this, Dali Lama that. It's as if China is only made up of Tibet and the Dali Lama is the only dissident in exile. Not once did I see the Tiananmen massacre being mentioned. Not once did I see the social instability in China being mentioned. Stop your futile attempts to separate Tibet from China and focus on the real issue at hand. The right issue. It's either that or shut up and let the Chinese sort out the mess themselves.

I wasn't referring to the people on this board. I was referring to the whole "Free Tibet" bandwagon everyone and their dog has been hopping on lately.

Why do human rights always get dragged into this?

Tibet being a part of China has nothing to do with human rights. It has to do with historical fact.
If you really can't understand why human rights get "dragged into this", I think you should go and do some thinking before you post here again. I can't believe someone actually said that.

Maybe you should re-read this thread then, because plenty of people have brought up the problems of China's authoritarian one-party state.

Watch the news, it's all about freeing Tibet and the Dali Lama. I would never complain if I saw the banner "Free China" and pictures of the Tank Man along side pictures of the sufferings in Tibet. If only once.

Um, for all the nationalists in this thread, China has always been a part of the greater Tibetan empire, and soon it shall be ruled by the great holy leader the Dalai Lama as part of the glorious nation of Tibet.

Maybe, but Tibet is a stepping stone to China's larger issues, not away to avoid them, as far as I can tell. Further, I do believe I posted a picture of the tank man on page 6 or 7 or so! :)

Good for you. Now we need to get all the freedom loving people in the world to hold up a picture of the tank man alongside pictures of the Tibetans when they are talking about China's abuse on human rights.

Edit : you lied. I went back and failed to spot a picture of the Tank Man.:burn: :burn:

I find it odd that the option to post pictures in this thread is removed. It's kind of ironic, seeing as how everyone is talking about democracy and what not here.

I WANT MY FREEDOM OF SPEECH DAMN IT MODS!!!!!

I was positive I posted it in a China thread. Let me check. Yeah, here it is, page 9 of this thread (at max posts per page):

http://community.boredofstudies.org/showthread.php?p=3391098&highlight=tian%2A#post3391098

I spoke about Tiananman square and the one-party state's abuse of human rights at the start of the thread, too, though perhaps in a manner too frank or sarcastic for some people to accept.

The Chinese nationalists in this thread seemed to think 'human rights' was limited to the right not to be tortured, beaten, or killed, when in fact it extends way beyond that to things like right to fair trial, freedom of expression and freedom of speech, right to feel and be safe. This is possibly where the communication broke down, as Aralia for example was arguing China has no human rights abuses in the face of me talking about erasure of the Tiananman square incident from public knowledge, and the great firewall of China.

Yeah it sucks re images, but Brogan was using it to post porn I believe. :p

You can't blame them. Chinese people born in the late 80s are ignorant of the fact that their beloved government used tanks to "restore social order" in 1989.
The great firewall of China is a joke, during my stay there, I was reading wikipedia and downloading porn off cumfiesta.com the whole time.

Damn it, it's always the horny folks that ruin it for everyone....:mad1:

Don't give me that "how many protests have you organised" bullshit. Don't try to patronise me. I am doing more than "organising protestes".

Like what...

I don't particularly have a strong opinion in this thread but when you say stuff like that and don't back it up, expect to have someone question it.

What are you doing personally that works better than a protest?

protests don't solve anything, but they do raise awareness.
