Which has better job prospects? Teaching or Pharmacy?

Pharmacy is pretty hard because it's quite saturated and you can't just open up a pharmacy after you graduate because you are only allowed to have a certain amount in one area and opening up your own pharmacy is every aspiring pharmacists goal most of the time. Whereas teaching is something that will always have higher job prospects. However don't let this determine your future because jobs are quite hard to find these days.

I can't speak for teaching, but I'll summarise the facts re: pharmacy's current state of affairs and leave you to draw your own conclusions:

• At present, there are approximately 25000 registered pharmacists in Australia
• Approximately 5000 community pharmacies operate in Australia
• The average community pharmacy does not employ 5 full time pharmacists
• Legislative restrictions prevent you from establishing a pharmacy anywhere that is even remotely profitable
• Hospital pharmacy is another alternative. However, you'll need to be competitive to have a shot at a position (ideally, graduate with honours).

Simple conclusion. Too many graduates not enough jobs. Super competitive to get a job. Companies opening chains means you most likely won't ever own your own pharmacy.
