It's pretty obvious teachers are under paid and under valued, but there's so many terrible ones that need to be weeded out for a higher social status to be truly deserved imo.

i have to agree...

if we didnt need teachers to mark our work i honestly would be studying at home and never turning up to class

teachers make so many ignorant mistakes and are as stubborn as hell when u try to REASONABLY rectify the issue

they get paid for making life difficult

hate!
Hi, my mum is a teacher and i myself am training to be a high school teacher - with a scholarship.
She worked out the other day she works over 50 hours a week. This is not equivalent to the salary she gets given. They do not get paid enough - considering also that much of their "holidays" are spent planning for the term and filling out documentation to come given the unreasonable requirements of curriculum and parent expectations.

NOW - As a tutor - EFF OFF !! - any hsc student deeply impacted by this ONE DAY strike two weeks out from end of term
1) has poorly planned and is leaving it far too late
2) has a poor teacher who is not willing to or has not ALREADY marked practice essays from trials (in excess of 3 weeks ago)

Teachers have to now work LONGER hours because of national curriculum and PLAN more in order to cover their arses against parent whinging and to make sure that everything is PC and relevant. AS WELL as dealing with the responsibility of looking after the growing myriad of cultures and behavioural problems. if any other job dealt with that - not to mention having classes ranging from ADD ESL students - to high functioning autistic students lets see them be happy if the government told them that their wages were being capped. i.e. also saying - who cares how hard it gets we aren't going to acknowledge your effort.

further to this, the "independent" person telling them to get back to work is just that (independent) they have little or no educational understanding (often the DET is scrutinised by teachers for having little empathy for educational implications) thus of course they will ignore it when some no body tells them its all ok when it most clearly is not. Those at school - consider the work a good teacher does - now consider they have to do double the class hours in planning and other school activities on average and tell me if a 60,000 dollar a year salary or less is ok.

Re: Illegal strikes by public servants

I love on the news they were talking about teachers starting on $57,000 a year salary and them claiming it's not enough. If you can't live on $57,000 a year there is something mentally wrong with you

What is obvious about it?
The value has diminished in part due to the erosion of trust between teachers and the government, who have restricted or taken away freedoms such as autonomy and control of teachers which they were previously afforded, now teachers are merely implementing decisions made by politicians and bureaucrats for the most part. Administrative and non-teaching duties have increased and become prioritised by the govt resulting in reduced time to spend on lesson preparation and working with other teachers to improve and develop.

Teacher's are responsible for shaping the future and dedicate their lives to doing so, they put in the effort to educate and motivate kids. It's hard as shit to get employed (depending on teaching focus, and I'm not suggesting this isn't the case with a multitude of occupations either), and often new teachers are on volatile contracts. They have to work for a shit ton of hours, not just what they spend in the classroom with the students but also planning several weeks (5 weeks minimum iirc) ahead, lesson planning especially when doing days let alone weeks is a very long process if you actually want to make your lessons meaningful and have the highest educational value (as opposed to just using some shit off the net). All this and yet they're made scapegoats for most (all) problems with the education system, and are treated harshly by society in terms of how many perceive the worth of the job. Plenty of people are mind bogglingly ignorant in thinking it's a job anyone can do, just like all professions the teacher needs to be someone who has the skills, the knowledge, the drive and maybe most importantly the passion to succeed in their field. It requires extreme dedication, care and skills as well as the ability to be critically reflective and analytical about what you are doing in all aspects of your teaching, and to be able to justify every move you make to a parent or principal who questions what you are doing and why you are doing it (and within this you have to be able to cite research/academic material that proves or explains the benefits or your actions).
In countries where the standards of education are highest such as Korea, Singapore and Finland, teachers are payed well and are respected / have a much higher social status than here and are given much more autonomy.

Good teaching is one of if not the, top most important factors for allowing the country to succeed by securing the economic future of the nation and keeping us competitive on the global market.
For the amount of work it takes to teach (properly), and as a job that seeks to give children as best of a shot possible to achieve success in their life whilst trying to mitigate any disadvantages and/or deficits they may bring and also work around the disadvantages and/or deficits embedded within the education system that impact certain students, 50-60k is absolute rubbish.

Back then, being a teacher was prestigous but nowadays, the requirements to become a teacher have clearly changed for the worse.
Hence, the older teachers who have more experience are generally better than the newer teachers.
The pay for teachers should increase, this way the government will be able attract more people to become teachers.

It's also not only teachers jobs they're cutting. My dad just told me at the protest today he met nurses who had come from hospitals where they had slashed 120 of the 400 jobs. As a result, the remainders have to work non-stop at a breakneck pace and suffer the incredible fatigue. Or of course they could walk.
I think there's gonna be a lot more accidents in the future in hospitals if O'Farrell (or however you spell that cretin's name; I don't know) wants a good public system but isn't willing to pay for it. Despite the industrial action apparently he still is going ahead with it. He just doesn't care because he's not affected; all he cares about is his position as premier of this state.
Neither do the Labor imbeciles who applauded, cheered on and thumbed up the rally today. It's because of their blatant incompetence that all of this has happened. Vote for either party and we're screwed either way.

I don't see your point. Are you trying to suggest the nurse/my dad was lying?
It's sad how the best discussion some of you can come up with is calling others "gay cunt" and "labor stooge", or making stupid smart alec comments.

If that is the case, explain why they have created an unprecedented number of nursing positions for next year?

There have been no cuts to front line public service staff (nurses, teachers, police etc) by the current government. The very opposite in fact. The budget provides funding for recruiting 2475 nurses, 900 teachers and 550 police.

They are the facts. Anything else you hear are blatant lies being propagated by union leaders to scare their members.

Who says this? For all you know it could be an unprecedented number of much lower wage nursing positions after firing the ones on the current wage.

I don't know where you get your statistics from. I just know that the thousands of nurses and teachers marching today in protest for their jobs was very real.

My teachers have been ranting all week about this strike since my subjects are pretty related (economics and business studies which both incorporate employment relations). Im just curious how large the ramifications could be from this considering there income is only being downgraded by like 1% p.a .
