Or bring a friend to a computer store and have them tell you if it's a good price or not.

Important is to research prices, true, but you don't have to know yourself what the parts do unless you're really into it. Just make sure that your friend is looking after YOUR best interests and not his/her OWN. :)

seems like only 1.8GHz, but it is enough for almost anything you want to do.
it won't be 60% the performance of a 3Ghz P4.
I'm assuming you're comparing a 1.8GHz G5 to a normal 3GHz P4? If so, whoops, I'm certain a G5 is a 64bit processor, so comparison (to my limited knowledge of G5 and AMD64) is a litter harder than just 3.0GHz is more than 1.8GHz.

Sorry MedNez, I'm gonna have to disagree here.
NEVER GO TO A COMPUTER SHOP TO GET ADVICE! They're like car salespeople, if you look/sound like you have no clue about computers, they'll take advantage of it.
Haha Tim; I agree, I was aiming for Lainee to seek advice from people who supposedly know exactly what they're talking about from experience, and then if they recommend any major changes, we can offer advice on whether it's a rip off, or whether it's a good change.

Considering Intel created it's processors with the intent to reach huge clock-cycle speeds rather than pure performance (for marketing of course) it is ludicrous to compare anything by MHZ. Hence the PR rating on AMD chips, 1.8GHZ of AMD = 3GHZ Intel.

umm thats compared to a Mac architecture... not AMD..

AMD actualli uses Mhz and Ghz similar to intel.. but AMD lack performance in overclocking, ive witnessed this,,the timing in most AMDs are locked and piss me off..

umm a G5 is a totally different terms to Intel and AMD stuff.. U SHOULDNT compare them based on the specs.. u got to talk about real world performance..
lik how fast WinWord opens .. or rendering .. or watever ure doing..

lik Macs are real good as there is only one supplier (proprietary) and the software code is optimised.. like i think for lainee a Mac would rock.. stability on a mac is great.. especialli in OS X

go thru the student page.. and get 10% off..

That holds true of all processors. As I mentioned, AMD always have a lower clock rating per-performance compared to Intel. Hence all MHZ comparisons are quite useless between any processors. A 1.8GHZ AMD is much much faster than a 1.8GHZ Intel.

As for overclocking, both AMD and Intel are now impossible to multiplier unlock AFAIK, and FSB settings are completely motherboard dependant. Despite this pretty much every mobo allows FSB and VCORE adjustments. AFAIK Athlons aren't less overclockable than Pentiums. It would have to do alot more with stepping hence luck.

Agreed, most users can go for a Mac. But they aren't exactly much fun or use for enthusiasts who love to fiddle around and such... or play games.

There are plenty of games for Mac. Lots of games come with a Mac port.

Hmm, just me but i thought AMD were superior to most chips in terms of overclocking

Lots? Let us be reasonable. Few games come with a Mac port, even fewer with a decent Mac port. What would the figure be? 5% of games? 10% at most? Best case scenario 10% of all games are decently ported.

You know I love Linux, but I would be lieing if I said it has lots of games, or that I can play lots of the popular games on it, even with Wine I would still have alot of trouble getting games to work, even then it will suffer in the performance department. But at least it plays Quake3 engined games well.

I love Linux and *shock horror* I don't play games! We work fine together. I might like to play the odd strategy game, such as Starcraft or AoE or be old school and play the old Warcraft games (you know, before it got shit) under WINE, and it works perfectly.

Actually they don't overclock as much because they don't need too, its quiet hard too get 1GHz from the barton cores (from what i remember) but the northwood cores are relatively easier, but lets not forget the athlon overclock is way more effective

so it still balances up with the more effecient cycles athlons can do

I was just illustrating the fact that Mac doesn't play many games, and no matter how much you love a platform. lieing to yourself about its capabilities is pointless.

Hmmm... I went to another computer store today, and they quoted pretty much the same price ($2040) but I was -this- close to placing a deposit (salesman was cute ;) ) before he mentioned how there weren't any black BenQ monitors in stock, and that he'ld have a hard time making everything co-ordinate. I'm just so dumbstruck that he was actually considering getting me a beige monitor and black case. So he tells me to wait for a few weeks if I wanted the exact colours... Needless to say, I wasn't going to put a deposit on those terms.

Just getting slightly disillusioned about getting a new computer. :(

Weeks? Crikey, most computer stores have 7 or 8 day leads on getting equipment in (unless it's very specific), but a blank monitor isn't really rare =\

But otherwise that would've worked out well with that price. The only ways I see it are that you can wait for that store, or ask another store. If you're anywhere in Sydney near Sutherland/Miranda/Sylvania/Hurstville, try giving Himark a ring.

Yes that's shocking! I wouldn't go for a beige monitor unless everything around me was beige (o_O)
