Blaming the police ... the family of Skye Webbe, who was a passenger in the stolen car driven by her boyfriend Justin Williams believe the fatal crash is the police's fault.

fuck people are dumb

:(
ok genius. you call the shots now

guy steals $1000 from a corner shop, pursue or not?

guy steals $10,000,000 from a bank, pursue or not?

realizing the pursuit of both will be putting the public at risk, and the criminal/criminals in the bank robbery will be much less likely to surrender

realizing these are "crimes that do not put anybody at danger" but corrupt the integrity of society

because 4 insignificant innocents died, you are calling for the police department to change their operations

id much rather see a headline of numerous innocents dying, than knowing many more criminals may get away with punishment

in that situation the police should do anything they can to retrieve the stolen fiat currency
including highspeed pursuits and shooting radar guided missiles at the car

It depends on the speed. At a certain speed, they should not persue, regardless of the financial cost. No cost can be placed on life. A human life isn't worth $10 million.

Police not pursuing, and therefore aggravating, criminals in high speed chases is as much about protecting the offender, as it is about protecting the public.

"They're to blame, they're to blame totally, I blame the police totally," she said.
"Yes, Justin may have a little bit to do with it but ... you know."

Justin may have a little bit to do with it . . . . .ah yeah he does he crashed his car into another car and killed four people. What a bloody mole of a woman.

question: if terrorists capture two aussie civilians and demand $10,000,000 ransom for their safe return, do we succumb to their demands?

Police have a mandate to prevent people, even if they have committed a crime, from harming themselves, and to protect criminals from coming to harm due to their actions. They have a duty to not intentionally do anything that may cause a criminal to come to harm, especially provoking or escalating a situation.

They can only cause harm when it's for the purpose of preventing harm coming to themselves or others.

A criminal offenders judgement may be severely impaired for whatever reason, they don't necessarily have the ability to form rational decisions at the time of offence, and the corresponding moral responsibility and culpability that comes with reasoned decision making.

ok what if its not a financial cost

replace car thief/bank robber with notorious drug lord/minion or whatever

in their vehicle, they are moving 20mil, street value of drugs travelling at 200km/h.

This thread is hurting my head, how come I agree with both of these views despite the fact they conflict each other...

this is not the same situation

if 10mil guarantees the safety of 2 lives, sure, succumb to their demands

the pursuit of criminals who stole 10 mil guaranteed the death of civillians, i would take your side

however, in pursuits there is a chance the public might be hurt or killed.
ive watched shows like highway patrol and ive played NFS, and i can easily say most police chases end in a surrender after the vehicle tyres are popped

funny how only when the occasional tragic incident occurs, people start blaming the bureaucracy
