How does this work? And how many students are given a state ranking, per subject?

How can you find out if you got a state ranking?

Between 10 and 20, depending on the canditure of each subject.

I believe you get a phone call if you come first, and will be notified when you recieve your results otherwise.

Hmm. Is this based on externals only? I can't remember how they determine this.

I am hoping to get one for Mathematics.

It is apparently out in 16th of December for state-ranks.

The state-rank is determined by externals first. If more than one person got the same HSC mark, the internal mark will be viewed. If internal mark is to be same...I don't know, they just get the same ranks. In terms of an Extension subject, extension mark can be viewed.

thats strange - so if you got harder tests yet the same mark due to the scaling system... you lose ranks in the State...

curious to know how many are awarded ranks (like top 100?)

When you say they look at internal marks, do you mean moderated internal marks or raw internal marks?

16th just for those who come first in the state, right?
And rest of the state ranks get notified a few days later.

I'm hoping to get one for Modern and also Society.
Teachers are speculating I'll get one for Extension History too.
Pressure.

Moderated marks, as it will only be fair in that way.

Example:

My school (internal, mine is boy-school by the way):

John: 1st 99
Matthew: 2nd 98
Jim : 3rd 97

HSC

Matthew: 1st 120/120
John : 2nd 110/120
Jim: 3rd 100/120

Average:
John gets: 120/120 for his internal and 110/120 for external
Matthew gets: 110/120 for his internal and 120/120 for external
Jim gets: 100/120 for his internal and 100/120 for external

Your school (internal):
Jane: 1st 99
Jack: 2nd 98
Hannah: 97

HSC

Hannah: 120/120
Jack: 110/120
Jane: 100/120

Average:
Jane gets: 120/120 for her internal and 100/120 for her external
Jack gets: 110/120 for his internal and 110/120 for his external
Hannah gets: 100/120 for her internal and 120/120 for her external

When they compare both schools:

State-ranks
1. Matthew
2. Hannah
3. John
4. Jack
5. Jane
6. Jim

In this exam, I put them in terms of raw HSC marks for accuracy reasons. But in terms of HSC result paper, you will get an aligned mark which is converted from raw mark to aligned mark.

By the way, 110/120 raw in maths paper may yield same aligned mark as 109/120 in terms of whole number (i.e. 96 aligned mark). But in reality, I am pretty sure that we acutally get aligned mark in terms of decimal such as 96.2 aligned mark, the HSC result paper just doesn't show it)

Thanks =]. Thats what I thought but I just wanted to make sure.

Some people think im gonna get a state ranking for biology (although Im not counting on it), but I have an internal mark of 80% because my teacher is like the worst marker ever, and didnt want it to bring me down (if it came to looking at internal marks). In 2006, 2 people at my school got state rankings in bio with internal marks of 75% and 71% (just for a guide of how hard my teachers marking actually is)

So as long as its the moderated mark, itll be cool, seeing as im ranked 1st.

I am not sure. Sorry for my lack of information on that one.

I thought all the state-rankers were announced...

Haha, thanks. It would be nice, but it's not something that i'm expecting just coz itll more likely not happen then happen.

Good luck for chem =] Going by your answers in the chemistry chain thread I'm sure you can get one =]

Yeh same.. It would be a nice surprise, but I'm not expecting it.

Just to note, there is a page on the BOS with Top Achievers in course list. Do they publish this after hsc results are released, or on 16th december like someone said?
I remember that 16th december is when people are notified that they are getting Premier's award.

Time will tell, lol

Although I'm sure I've read somewhere that on Dec 16th students receiving a Premier's Award are notified.

To get your premier's award, do you have to attend a special ceremony etc? Wouldn't there be heapsssss of people getting Premier's... so wouldn't that ceremony last for ages??
