Speech:

Belonging is a basic human need. It is something we long for or desire out entire lives, it is said to shape our identity. Good morning everyone. I believe one of the basic human needs we all long for is to belong, whether is it to a group, a place, a community or to people. In my opinion we need to feel wanted, accepted and comfortable in all aspects. The sense of belonging can emerge from different experiences or similar perspectives throughout society.
I am here today to express the lessons I have learnt about the concept of belonging. The simplest way to understand this concept is to put it into context. Today we are at school therefore belonging comes into place during our breaks.
Who do you sit with during recess and lunch?
Do you sit with your friends, colleagues,? do you sit with someone you don’t like? Why?
Is this because your friends for?
The people we sit with during this time are the people we choose, the ones we feel comfortable with for one reason or another.

Happy Feet is a film written by John Collee and Warren Coleman. The film is about a penguin named Mumble who is different to the other penguins. He is not accepted in his society, as he is without a heart- song. A song that makes the penguins find love with each other. However Mumble expresses his talent in a different way. He tap dances. All the penguins disapprove of this and want him to leave as they feel as though Mumble doesn’t belong. He is alienated by his family and community. Mumble himself believed he didn’t belong either, “was there any place where one small penguin without a heart-song could ever truly belong?” Mumble sets out on a journey to find unanswered questions not only about himself, but also as to why the penguin’s food source was decreasing day by day. His journey proved to Mumble that he could save his society and their food source. Through his journey Mumble also makes close friendships which leads to a sense of belonging.

Happy Feet represents two very different aspects of belonging. The film shows that Mumble doesn’t belong to his society of penguins, as he is not the same as everyone else is. He is highly disapproved for his tap dancing talent and his father believes he is “not penguin like.” however upon the end of the Mumble’s journey he finds a way to save their food source and this is through his talent. In the end Mumble belonged right where he started. The society of penguins tap danced just like Mumble to save their source. Mumble was accepted and did belong back in his society.

The film Happy Feet is in some ways the same form of context as the core text we have learnt in class which was ‘Swallow the air’ written by Tara June Winch, as both texts analyse a journey both characters took upon themselves. They both are seeking unanswered questions that both concern them and they want to find where they really belong.
May feels the strong resentment which is obviously portrayed by the other young people who live in the town and ‘own’ the beach by their aggressive, physical relationship they form with May. This is displayed by words such as ‘out with the black clouds in with the white, clean’ this resentment and alienations is due to May being an aboriginal girl, this is frowned upon in the town from the richer people who live closer to the beachers.
Even though their mother dies May and Billy still feel fellowship with each other and this mostly continues whilst they live with their aunt even though they have no union ship with the other young teenagers in the community.
When both journeys come to an end, they find themselves belonging back with their families. Mumble belonging to his group of penguins who he saved through his talent and May belonging to her Aunty, Brother and Paradise Parade who she always did belong to.

Through the study of Happy Feet it has given me a wider knowledge on Belonging. We see Mumble not being approved of and leaving his society as he didn’t belong, however he saved his penguins due to his unusual talent and therefore was accepted and did belong. Through the study I gained an understanding that just because you are different; this doesn’t mean you don’t belong. It just means people are unique in their own way and we should accept the benefits that differences create.

Whenever you plan a response for either the AOS or the modules, you must always answer these three things:

  • What is the composer saying about belonging

  • How has the composer done this? (technique related to the literary form preferably?)

  • Why has the composer's used this technique; to what effect does the usage of this technique affect how belonging is portrayed
Your response above is quite poor in this respect. Your speech read much more like a recount of the film, rather than an analysis.

Would you mind posting the question you were asked to answer on here?
