I know there's a thread but I'm not supposed to be on and this is quicker so yeah
the you is my teacher I was addressing her but I don't know if she's going to reply to my email because she's a busy busy person and so if anybody could help, appreciated!
A couple of things with the Solvay prac. What exactly is a side arm test tube?When you say'fit the stopper and delivery tube and clamp at a 30 degree angle to the retort stand' what do you mean? Which angle are you talking about - would it be possible for anyone to scan me a diagram of the set up for this experiment or even draw a rough one in Paint?
The observation would just be 'turns limewater milky' wouldn't it.
I have attached the prac writeup.
Please help, thanks

cherry , Im thinking i misled u, not all of the eqns on that file are irrelevent.

These two are irrelevant
NH3(g) + CO2(g) + H2O(l) ↔ NH4HCO3(aq)

NH4HCO3(aq) + NaCl(aq) ↔ NaHCO3(s) + NH4Cl(aq)

the most relevent eqns for the solvay process are

Main one: CaCO3(s) + NaCl -> Na2CO3(s) + CaCl2

others: CaCO3->(heat) CO2 + CaO
CO2 + H2O -> H2CO3
H2CO3 + NH3 -> HCO3- + NH4+
HCO3- + Na+ -> NaHCO3(s)
or these steps can be summarised into one
NaCl + NH3 + H2O + CO2 -> NaHCO3(s) + NH4Cl

then 2NaHCO3(s) -> (heat) Na2CO3(s) + H2O + CO2

Then

ammonia recyling

CaO(s) + H2O -> Ca(OH)2

Ca(OH)2 + 2NH4Cl -> CaCl2 + 2NH3 + 2H2O
