Hi!

I have just completed a bachelor of health science degree- major social health studies at UWS. It is a similar course to social science but it obviously has more of a health focus.

I know many people who have done social science and health science and job prospects are good- commnity development, health promotion, policy etc. I think it all depends on the major that you do. I was told by one of the academic co-ordinators that doing a bahelor of social science or even arts and health science that at the end you can do a bachelor of education in primary teaching. If you would like too.

However, If I was to now choose my degree I would do a bachelor of Social Work because its a recognised preofession, it has a professional organisation and there are heaps of jobs for social workers.

I know UWS has a bachelor of social work degree. But UNSW or USYD has a combined social work and social science degree that looks fantastic. Its a shame it wasn't avaliable when I first applied to uni.

Also, having just completed my degree experience in the field is very important. As far as I am aware, social science has no mandatory student work placements. Health Science on the other hand has one. However, work placements are mandatory in Social work and this really helps when applying for jobs ie. expereince in the field and also referees.

Apart from that have a look at:

http://handbook.uws.edu.au/hbook/course.asp?course=4545.2

http://handbook.uws.edu.au/hbook/course.asp?course=4598.1

These links are further information to the Bachelor of Social Science, Social Work and Health Science Degrees.

If you want further info just let me know and I can give you the contact details of one of my lecturers who is the co-ordinator for social science. I think speaking directly to lecturers is better than reading a course description that is quite misleading at times.

I have spent 5 years at UWS (also completing law) and its a great uni - the teaching staff are excellent and I have no complaints.

If you would like further info, just e-mail me on michelle_baldacchino@hotmail.com

anyway, hope this helps....
