1. deffering one year means you can TRAVEL, EXPLORE and being EXPOSED too soo much more of what is out there i.e. volunatary work at a hospital, go overseas. so YES, if you use a gap year to your advantage you can get a better idea of what you want to do. i'm not referring to career fairs and all - they are bullshit. you are clearly some stay at home nerdy faggot who lives behind his computer.
your logic is quite flawed here. I have been overseas, most likely visited more places than you. travelling and seeing the world doesnt have a relationship to your career options. i wonder how many people felt like working in a call centre after visiting india? or the pornography industry after visiting japan?

im not quite sure about volunteer work at a hospital, but you might be surprised at how little interest firms have in an volunteer coming in for "work experience" for a period. your training, insurance and whatever costs the firm, so technically they are paying for you to work for free. if your just gonna pop in for a week or so to see what its like, you may as well just ask someone at a careers fair or do some research

career fairs are bullshit? lol firms/unis invest quite a bit of resources within these things they think its quite useful, but clearly your opinions are more legit than the opinions of CEOs and universities

2. i personally have friends that have taken gap years and have increased umat from 40%ile to mid 90s after doing a prep course during a gap year so fuck you and your general consensus.
im not doubting the effectiveness of one year dedicated to the umat. but med entry is not the same? i know someone that got their umat from 50s to 88, still didnt get in, as i recall, their concern was that the schools recognized that you took a gap year to study

3. well if it sounds like a dumb idea to you then you don't do it dipshit. but dont go around making fucked up generalisations such as "gap years are for retards and white people" and "the people that are "sick of studying" tend to be the underachievers who have no studied at all". i know plenty of high 99ers who took gap years this year.
you cant possibly say my generalizations are wrong, sure you can be the outlier, but on the larger scale of things, it is typically the underachievers who are sick of studying. how do you know those 99'ers are taking one because they are sick of studying. some might have personal reasons but will cover it up with something like, travelling/sick of studying or whatever, but lets assume they are "sick of studying". for every 99'er you can find, i can find 100 underachievers that are sick of studying

im taking a gap year myself for reasons 2 and 3. so ill see how umat goes, and i am pretty sure i dont fit the category of peopne who "have no studied at all". so there are exceptions to your generalisations, and the only reason im guessing you'd make such generalisations is you think you are some kind of elitist, who is "better" than someone who takes a gap year. so fuck you.
and it seems as if you are not familiar with the connotations of the term generalization, there will be exceptions. my original quote was "gap years are for retards and white people", is not gap years are exclusively for retards and white people. this was a generalization, meaning there are exceptions.

i dont think im better than people because they take a gap year, and it just so happens that gap year takers tend to use the year to "party and have fun" because they are "sick of studying" after they got their 60 atar, then if thats the case yes i do think i am better than them, im sure u do too

best of luck with your UMAT/future endeavors
