I love maths, however for my year 11 final mark i got a mark of 84% for 2units adv maths and 70% for 3 units. but i was averaging 80's for 3 units until the final exam came, where i got a shocking 54%, however my teacher said it was a hard exam and was actually happy with my mark.

Anyways i'll give u a list of my subjects:
physics
chemistry
4units english
3units maths

i allready completed HSC arabic, so in total i have 13 units for my HSC, but i'm only doing 11 now that i've completed arabic.

Can anyone please give me some advice, because the topics in 4 units seem to be extremely interesting. I'm hoping some students who have allready completed the HSC can offer their advice. however anyones advice will be greatly appreciated....

I had a very similar story to you....my marks for ext 1 were around 70% for the preliminary course, but I didn't put a great deal of effort in and I know I can easily improve my marks. I really like maths and the head teacher told me I should give it a go and so far I really enjoy it. So I think you should give it a go, but maybe continue doing the 2u exams for a while in case you decide you want to drop 4 u.

Go for it!

I averaged 90% for 2u and 70% for 3u in prelim. Now I am around 70% for 2u, 80% for 3u, and 90% for 4u in year 12. Most of my class is around 50 to 70% for 4u. :)

I'll obviously have to improve my 3u mark though.

looking at ur work load ..
u plannin to get into uni
ur course. does it need 4u?
u do 4u english physics and chem .. they're quite hectic already ..
u really want to added another unit to maths and make it 4u?

just do what you find is neccesary to get you the marks u need to get into uni
theres no point in doing 4u if you're gonna stress over it ..
but if you feel that you are confident that you will do very well . then you might as well have a go at it .. because you still can decide to drop the subject i think ..
don't know bout your skool but yeh

if your doing pretty good in
physics .. chem ... and everything else ..
i don't think its really neccessary to do 4u ..
but yeh your decision .. not mine .. took me a while before i decided whether i do it or not ..

phys, it's very simple:
-if you love maths, do it
-if you don't love maths, don't do it

I love maths and hate HSC physics, but love physics normally, such as quantum and astrophysics.

guys thanks for the advice. most of u r saying if i'm going good at my other subjects, u know like there's no need to do 4 units maths.
well i'm not really sure what u mean by good, so here r my marks:
prelim. marks:

Physics=81%
chemistry=71%
2units adv english=77%
3units english =82%
maths 2u adv=84%
maths 3u=70%

And arabic, well i'm waiting on my HSC results, but i'm ranked 1st.

once again thanks guys. And by the way another bit of info. which may be important...... it's the first year my school is offering 4 units and theres only 1 student doing it at the moment.... A 98% student both in 2units and 3 units.

Your prelim marks are fine, not just for maths but for the other subs aswell.

EDIT: I originally used 'you're'.

4u was my best .. and it scaled accordingly..
just do wat u are comfortable with.. too many units could result in significantly worse marks

I figured a double post was unecessary, and I couldn't be bothered putting it into the first post.

Here, though: *slaps head*

If you take up the 4U course you'll have the same subjects as me. I say go for it. It's a fun combination. Math all feeds into itself and english ext. 2 is a mad bludge so it's not half as bad as some people might have you think.

I personally really dig physics so it's never a problem. I inadvertently learn a lot of that stuff through reading that I do anyway. To counterbalance that, I think chemistry blows. The only way I can reconcile it is to work out what is happening in terms of quantum physics but that is somewhat limited...

As i'm sure you've found, the work loads for the phys and chem stuff aren't real bad. The take home tasks are easy compared to any humanities essays and the math isn't at all rigourous. As long as you're solid on the concepts and you know a bit of the history/philosophy of that science then it's all good. I find that the sciences take care of themselves pretty well.

I reckon the 4U, 4U, phys, chem combo gives me a pretty neat and ordered work load. I'm sure that you're intelligent and as long as you can manage your time semi-well you will be fine. However, keep in mind that I am one of these people who doesn't spend much time on english tasks and does the majority of them the two nights before they are due. This is a factor in my finding the work load cruisy.

go for your life, i don't think u'll be disappointed.

if ur interested in the work then u'll perform a lot better as well. 4 unit is great (please don't tell anyone else i said that, i'd get slaughtered), u'll be fine with it.

i did it and enjoyed it heaps, gettin my results back in a few days now, it'll probably be my best subject. 4U comes highly recommended from me.
