How do they pull down a footbridge on a main road like that?
Are those who live closeby going to say farewell?
yes...because everyone has such a close bond to the bridge. people will gather with candles and sing songs to commemorate its death...
as for how:
Friday evening, 26 October 2007
At close of business, the contractors close the footbridge to
pedestrians from Eastern Avenue and from the Wentworth building and
fences will be put up to prevent people from entering this new
construction area. From this time, all pedestrians will need to
cross City Road at the traffic lights.
Saturday evening, 27 October 2007
At 10pm, the RTA closes City Rd to vehicle traffic and a crane is
brought in to lift sections of the bridge onto trucks to take away.
Sunday morning, 28 October 2007
City Rd re-opens to vehicle traffic around 10am.
Monday 30 October - Thursday 1 November 2007
Contractors demolish and remove the remaining concrete ramp and
bridge pile on Eastern Avenue.
Friday 2 November 2007
Contractors move the site fence from where the old City Rd gate used
to be, further along Eastern Avenue to Carslaw building. A new
temporary path opens between Carslaw building and Madsen building,
which will take people to Fisher Road and then to the City Rd
traffic lights.
Work begins immediately on the construction of a new footbridge
linking Sydney Central with Eastern Avenue. This is due to open in
March 2009.
